: What is best way to match the length of the song to the photos when making a Photo Montage with the AVIO?
Assuming you know the length of the song in seconds (S) and the number is photos (N), and you plan to use a dissolve or transition between each one (D seconds), the length of each photo (L) should be:
L=(S/N)+D
If you're trying to figure out how long to make the song(s) based on the number of pictures you have, you must first determine how long you want each photo to be displayed (P). P will depend on several factors, including the clients desires, the purpose of the video, the mood of the video, and the speed of the music desired. Typically, the length falls between 4 and 7 seconds. Of course, you must know the number of photos (N) as well and simple math will get you the song length (S) that you need:
S=PxN
-- keep in mind after figuring this that you must add the dissolve or transition length (D) to the desired display length of each photo (P) to determine the raw photo length (L) when capturing, importing or making stills.
Don't forget to include the title screen and the ending screen (many times the last image will stay up twice as long and fade out slowly).
... don't you wish you'd stay awake during math class now?

I use Sonicfire pro. You can match each generated musical interlude excatly to your pictures.
Works great not copyright problems.

Re: ******** Photo Montage ******** [In reply to] Can't Post

I realize that this isn't very helpful but the best way to do a photo montage with an Avio is to take it down the street to someone with a PC or Mac.
Bob has pointed out all the mathematics that are involved but even with the math done correctly the fact is this is not an easy system to do montages with. This is one area that the the whole Casablanca's line weak audio capabilities become glarilying evident.
With the PC you can get very simply get motion into your photos, add some layers, change the timing slightly so it works a little better with the music rather than being a set length for each photo, etc. It was doing a photo montage that first got me hooked on Vegas. It is incredibly quick and easy to do with it. Even Premiere does a great job handling doing this for basic stills and music. I have found that it is the motion that really sells clients and Vegas is unbeatable for this.

I am thinking about getting a Vegas, now that you all agree.
By the way what do you mean by motion in the photo montage?

That is how I do it right now, doing the math does not work perfect, you have to trim the song sometimes.
I was hoping there was an easier way, like the Vegas or iDVD and FCP.

You can do a slow zoom in then a crossover to a new picture.
Or you can have a PIP float across the screen and/or "Push" a picture in/out. Using a combination of these will give a sense of motion to your photo montage.
I'm sure there are other tricks.

Arn't you talking about transitions between two pictures?
Do you have a lot of transition choices with Vegas? Can you gat more?
Does BorisFX support Vegas?

Transitions are transitions. Motion is motion. For instance, you have a photo of two people - motion allows you to zoom into one of the two people or start on one person and zoom out to include the two. Or you could move the entire photo anywhere in the screen.
There are a multitude of transitions available - more than you probably need plus a bundle of video effects - the usual things like black and white, slo-mo, etc. but also some very sophisticated ones. With Spicemaster or just using gradient wipes it would give you another 500 or so transitions plus the ability to create your own.
Boris is currently not supported but the new Boris Red 3.0GL will be supported in Vegas. And any font that is on your computer can be used in titling. Add more fonts to your system (thousands of free ones available) and they are automatically available in Vegas. (Or any other PC based NLE for that matter).

Sonicfire pro is a stand along music generator program from a company called Sonic Desktop You can buy a number of different cd's each with a infinate variety of music. You pick the sound you like and then just tell the program how long a clip or song you want and it makes it for you. I love it you just take thw wav file and import it into your editing program and all done. All music is custom generated and copyright free. Visit the web site at sonicdesktop.com and you will love it they have samples of the music so you can pick and chose what you want to buy.

You can. I do the zoom all the time and I just have the basic avio with the pro software. You can do a lot with these machines.

Sorry I forgot you are using Avio. Just put your picture up on time line like you want them and figure out what time you want before changing tune. Then go to your pc and create the exact legnth tune in Sonicfire pro. Then go from your sound card out to your audio in on the avio (I used to do it through the audio ins on my vcr which was already hooked up to the avio) then just run the music into the avio and put it on the time line repeat for each tune works quick and easy and gives you a custom show.
