A reason to buy 2.0 Smart Edit! Can't Post

Here it is ...
A Kron can use drives up to 120 GB, just like a PC, when you buy the $249 Smart Edit software! If you're just using the old Dumb Edit software, you're forever limited to 80 GB (an average of about 35 minutes per project in DV quality). So for a mere $249 (plus the cost of the hard drive & installation & smart media card), you can increase that to a whopping 50 minutes per project!
This is not reflected in the manual, but was confirmed by MSUS tech support.
Fortunately, the Smart Edit manual DOES say, "We would also like to point out that Casablanca has been designed with the hobby enthusiast in mind." ... thus the video professionals still have no need to be concerned with competition from the hobbyists who buy Casablanca products for editing.

Re: reasons NOT to buy 2.0 Smart Edit! Can't Post

Hi,
I read the software release notes and it states that if you are using Kron MPEG2 quality settings and you are creating a dvd, avoid using a new scene (Black,Color Bars, Countdown, and Patterns) longer then 3 seconds, it will cause the project to get out of sync after adding it to your DVD project.
This sounds like the bug with New scene with Version 1.0
Also, the second reason has to do with the Avio Audio Mix window
In the smart edit release notes, it states that with the Avio and AvioDVPro it will not come with Audio Timeline display feature. Tjis means you will not be able to see waveoforms on any of the audio tracks.

Hi,
A reason to buy Smart Edit software, is that we will be able to fade in/out on camera tracks. This was taken away from us when Version 1.4 was released.

Pro & Con & Qs on 2.0 Smart Edit [In reply to] Can't Post

OK, you've read the hype, now let's get the real story from users ... here's the list so far:
PRO:
1. Restores fade in/out on camera tracks (an original feature lost in OS1.4)
2. Allows 120 GB drives in Kron (undocumented - need confirmation)
CON:
1. Revives old "New Scene" bug from OS1.0 so you can no longer use Black, Color Bars, Countdown, and Patterns in a DVD project from MPEG2. [Note: this MAJOR bug is likely to be permanent, since MS is abandoning MPEG2 editing]
2. Avio and AvioDVPro it will not come with Audio Timeline display feature. This means you will not be able to see waveforms on any of the audio tracks. [A new feature that's not a feature?]
3. Delete button removed from recording screen (now requires changing screens to delete bad takes)
4. Split button removed from recording screen (now requires changing screens to auto-split DV footage)
5. Many other advertised features don't apply to any Avios and standard Krons.
NEUTRAL:
1. Installation wipes out existing projects.
2. Scene creation is faster (about 60% of scene length on Kron, unknown on Avio), but not instantaneous as with Cassie and other NLEs.
UNKNOWN:
1. Does installation prevent future editing on older drives with previous OS installed, like the 1.2=>1.4 upgrade did?
2. Does creation of longer scenes still lock up?
3. Does batch rendering still "forget" to render some of the transitions on the Kron?
4. Can MPEG2 projects be output via firewire?
5. Does DV input still sputter and lose sync during input?

In your rush to "go negative" you ought to get your facts straight.
Banned Bob said-
: PRO:
: 1. Restores fade in/out on camera tracks (an original feature lost in OS1.4)
: 2. Allows 120 GB drives in Kron (undocumented - need confirmation)
: CON:
: 1. Revives old "New Scene" bug from OS1.0 so you can no longer use Black, Color Bars, Countdown, and Patterns in a DVD project from MPEG2.
Only a person like you would want to use Kron MPEG for DVD burning since DV mode DVD prep is 6 times faster than MPEG.
: 2. Avio and AvioDVPro it will not come with Audio Timeline display feature.
The new "timeline" display on the audio mix (proportional to time) is active on both our standard Avios and Avio Pros, same as the Kron and Prestige. Doesn't have much functionality now but it is on all models. (I'm curious where this may go in the future.)
The Avio, without Pro, doesn't have audio scrub waveform but that's as it allways was.
: 3. Delete button removed from recording screen (now requires changing screens to delete bad takes)
Don't record bad scenes. 8-) Since one does most deleteing from the main editing screen we haven't find this any loss at all. We don't like the fact that the copy button has been moved to the special screen.
: 4. Split button removed from recording screen (now requires changing screens to auto-split DV footage)
What's the deal? The _auto_ split button was on the record screen but we did all or spitting, auto or manual, from the main edit screen anyway.
: 5. Many other advertised features don't apply to any Avios and standard Krons.
Such as? Our new Prestige and older Krons are now running the same v2 software and have identical capabilities except for the hardware differences. Our Avios running the new software are only missing the features they always didn't have unless they had DV or are running pro s/w. They seemed to have everything else.
: NEUTRAL:
: 1. Installation wipes out existing projects.

Only if you do a full installation. The new software didn't reuquire a project-loosing installation over our 1.8 we were running.
: 2. Scene creation is faster (about 60% of scene length on Kron, unknown on Avio), but not instantaneous as with Cassie and other NLEs.
But its a lot faster than before.
: UNKNOWN:
: 1. Does installation prevent future editing on older drives with previous OS installed, like the 1.2=>1.4 upgrade did?
It didn't on our machines. I checked using v1.8.
: 2. Does creation of longer scenes still lock up?
Hasn't yet.
: 3. Does batch rendering still "forget" to render some of the transitions on the Kron?
Not yet. Maybe yours has Allzhimers. 8-)
: 4. Can MPEG2 projects be output via firewire?
Yes.
: 5. Does DV input still sputter and lose sync during input?
We never had a loss of sych even with v1.8. The audio monitored from the system was out of sync with the source audio but the recorded clips had perfect audio. All of our dv recordings with the new software have been fine.
THINGS OUR PEOPLE REALLY LIKE:
Hard drives can be named.
Larger (four times) selected clip bin icons. And we can use one button click to jump to beginning or end of clip in the bin.
Video clips can be added or removed from storyboard without knocing audio clips off.
Music tracks can be locked or unlocked when adding video clips.
Autosplit now works for video clips recorded Firewire out to dv tape and then back in.
We can now add selectable color fades to clips.
We can now preview our titles from the text entry screen.
Several new additions to text such as variable outline widths and extruded letters.
Anti-alias seems better.
On our Krons and Prestige we can rip audio tracks from cds much faster than before.
We can record audio in while playing back the video storyboard.
We can use the finish screen range function to control what goes to a dvd.
We can copy unprotected dvds.
We now have audio scrub from the scene range screen.
We keep finding new stuff every day.

I'm only posting what I've read from:
1. Folks who are using it
2. Information in the Manual
3. MSUS tech support
Thanks for your keen insights, Cal. I'll incorporate some of your observations in with the next Pro/Con/N/Q post.
Thanks!
BTW, negativity is in the eyes of the beholder. Personally, I like being fat and compliment someone on their keen observation skills when they call me "fat". However, I do know certain folks who have abundantly more surplus than I who would beat you unmercifully if you were to call them "fat". To them, truthfullness is equated with negativity. I see that a lot in this business.
