Am I loosing any resolution with my method? Can't Post

I'm recording in SVHS and Hi-8.
I transfer and edit with a Kron in DV mode 5.
I transfer edited footage to SVHS.
I transfer back to the Kron in mode 8 (Native DV).
Then I burn a DVD.
All of this because I currently only have a 40 meg HD and all of my "unedited" footage will not fit in Native DV.
One of these days I'll have DV cameras and a bigger Hard Drive. Not that I have hard drive envy or anything.
So, am I sacrificing any quality from my original SVHS and HI-8?
Thanks,
Stan

Stan, you're losing a ton of quality. Most folks don't realize this, but the color resolution of SVHS is only 40 (that's Forty, ten less than Fifty) lines. You do lose some quality going in via analog. Then you lose some in the MPEG mode. You then lose a bunch more going back out to SVHS. Then you lose more again coming back throught the analog mode. At best, the DVD you burn will approximate third generation SVHS.
Counting your time, it's not worth the hassle. Just run down to Staples and buy you a 80GB hard drive. For heaven's sake, it's less than $100 -- and your time has got to be worth something, not to mention the horrible loss you're incurring. Not only will you save time AND money, but you'll keep your clients and prevent harm to the industry. Huh? Well, if you burn DVDs that look like 3rd generation SVHS, folks are going to pass that information around and hurt the market for the higher quality that can be obtained doing it first generation.
Good luck!

Look at the bright side. You appear to be having success burning DVDs. Thats more than most of the posters seem to be able to do.
