Avio vs Sequel Can't Post

I have a lot of underwater video I want to edit and trying to find out if anybody can tell me which machine would give me the best quality. All my tapes are DV. I know the Avio has better compresion than the Sequel, but that's about it.
Thanks,

Re: Avio vs Sequel Can't Post

While I've never had a chance to test the image quality of the AVIO and SEQUEL side by side, I can tell you that in the highest quality mode of both units, the images are OUTSTANDING!!!
If there is any real difference in image quality between the AVIO and the SEQUEL, the difference must be very minor. One can quote different specifications in different ways to "prove" one is better than the other, but it doesn't take into account the way we see things. So saying the SEQUEL is better because it uses 4:2:2 sampleing (AVIO is 4:2:0) is meaningless, both look great. I could also say that the AVIO is better because it uses a more efficent compression system than the SEQUEL, thus less loss...
Dave, from Applied Magic, has pointed out that when testing the image quality with a Tecktronics (model ???) Image Analyzer, the SEQUEL came out a little ahead of the AVIO as for image quality. Dave is a great guy and knows his technical stuff, but he and I differ regarding this test. I feel that the test equipment may be measuring something we can't see. Dave feels that the test proves that the image quality of the SEQUEL is slightly better than the AVIO. We may not aggree, but we do respect each other's knowledge and skills.
The botton line is the real difference between the SEQUEL and the AVIO is NOT the image quality. The real difference is between cost and what you may want the unit to do.
The AVIO sells for $1,295 or $1,795 with the DV input option whenever that comes out. ;-) Currently users are feeding DV into the AVIO using the S-Video input and the image quality is outstanding.
The SEQUEL sells for $1,995 and it's "big brother", the ScreenPlay sells for $2,495 (18GB on sale) --> $3,995 (60 GB).
The SEQUEL (and ScreenPlay) cost more than the AVIO, is it worth the extra cost??? It all depends on what you want to do and what your needs are...
If all you want to do is edit footage with cuts only, fade-in, fade-out, crossfade (disolve), and wipes, the AVIO will work for you and you really don't need to spend the extra money.
On the other hand, the SEQUEL (and ScreenPlay) offer system expansion (externial hard drives), real time slow motion, real time freeze frame, real time titles, real time color correction, and other cool things... is it worth the extra cost? For some yes, for others no.
You can check out what users of each system have to say at the following links:

I suggest you consider cost vs the functions you'll want or need in a NLE. I hope this helps...

Best Wishes,
Bob Diaz
