At this point in time, the only quality mode that can be recorded out to DV from the Avio is Quality 7 [DV Direct] (Quality 8 on Kron). All other qualities are converted from DV to MPEG2 during input, and cannot (yet) be converted back out to DV for recording. Hopefully, MS will figure out how to do this soon.
It's just an inconvenience for some of us, because we don't want to lose that extra quality and deal with another set of cables to hook up. For others who have DV devices without analog inputs for recording, it's a real deal-breaker, since you can put video in via firewire, but not get it back out, unless you're using DV Direct (at which point you lose real-time transitions and higher storage capacity).
Again, we'd like to see this problem corrected soon (but don't count on it -- after three years in development and two years on the market, it's probably not wired for it).
Best advice: get analog input cables for the camera and record in through them for this project, then use DV Direct exclusive until the problem is solved.

Re: DV-OUT [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank You,
If I have undersood right, there is no chance to get it out thruough dv-out, when i didn't record it from the beginnig in DV-Direct mode?
Another question, is it right that it is not possible to change to DV-Direct mode after I have recorded in another quality?
i tried to change the quality, but there is only 1-6, no 7 or DV Direct.

Yes, that is correct. That's the beauty of this system! :-)

Because the system works in native dv or direct dv as we call it, when in the dv direct mode you can capture, edit and record out in the native signal without any recompression. In the MPEG mode you can record in analog or dv and then record out analog. Development is working on a solution which will also allow the mpeg to be converted to dv so that you can record out to dv in the mpeg mode. I can't give you a time frame as it is quite a programming process. Hopefully it will be soon.
Sincerely,
David Slone

Maybe I am missing the point but I can record DV out from the AVIO into a Sony TRV 900 camera without any problems.
This was done after taking raw footage DV out from the camera to the AVIO then edit etc and record back out to DV.

That's correct, Paul. However, there is only one mode out of 7 modes (8 on the Kron) that allows you to record out via firewire. All other modes require analog output.
Those other MPEG2 modes are the major selling point of these machines, since they allow between 2x and 9x the storage capacity of the straight DV mode, and they also are the only modes that have some realtime playback effects (all DV must be rendered). It's especially difficult for wedding videographers who many times need more than the 85 minutes of storage in DV mode, but have to pay a few hundred dollars more to buy software and hard drives allowing more capacity. It wasn't really clear to us when we paid extra for these firewire equipped units that the digital output was only for one of the quality modes, and that such output required additional rendering.
I'm sure Dave and the team are working hard on solving the problem. And I bet they're sure glad that us Avio/Kron owners are such a wonderfully patient bunch ... still waiting after nearly two years!
And we still love MSUS as much as ever!

All is now much clearer - thanks for that Bob.
Seems like I've been mistaken as well - fortunately I can get away with the time length problem at the moment.
Biggest problem I have is not getting sound into a Pioneer DVD recorder using this method.
Anyway, you'll just have to cut your wedding videos down a bit!!
Thanks
Paul
