Not a bad price at all, my problem with Screenplay is they
have no customer service track record, Draco does and it's a
good one. Also the few posts I've read about it indicate it
may not be as stable as the Cassie, and stability is the
whole reason to buy a "black box". I'm wondering if the Pentium
based Avio will be as stable as the old unit. Been considering
Avio since they announced it, don't need layering and audio
scrubbing so it could fill my needs nicely. Noticed though that
the $1495 price has been forgotten, it's now "under $2000".
Supposedly they are using a faster processor and a larger 20
gig HD though, which could justify the increase.
Does anyone know how much the firewire option will add to the price?

They are a fairly new company of coure their not going to have a track record give them as much time as Draco and they will surprise you. The screenplay is more stable than the cassie was when it first came out. I have had both the scxreenplay has great potential.

>>>Will this be a good or bad surprise is the question.

The screenplay is more stable than the cassie was when it first came out.
>>>>This is a false statement. What are you basing this on? I have owned a Cassie for over two years and it is a solid platform. I owned the Cassie before its trade show debut in 1997 and it didn't crash or lock up at the trade show. Even at its introduction it was a solid platform. The Screenplay unit repeatedly locked up at a trade show in Las Vegas this past August. I was considering the unit but it still has bugs in the system.

I have had both the scxreenplay has great potential.
>>>It does have potential...but I wouldn't give a wooden nickel for potential versus an actual proven track record.

Neil, I have also had a casablanca and I work with a demo screenplay that was won at a weva convention. The screenplay locking up is no different than the cassie getting green or red errors. the screenplay does not lose clips atleast not for me. Keep your nickels, the screenplay will surpass the cassie in the way of fucntions this year. The cassie had its problems when it first came out so don't sit here on this list and say it was rock solid when it was't

Joel,
Let me reiterate. The Cassie was more stable at its debut than the Screenplay unit was at its debut.
The Cassie did produce frequent green and red error messages in its early software versions. I never saw it lose footage or lock up at a trade show, unlike the screenplay has been doing (locking up-not losing footage).
The Cassie is a rock solid platform now. If you think not then poll some users. The Screenplay posts heavily lean towatds the unit having lots of bugs in the system now. I know the future always promises smaller, faster, cheaper. The problem is all my clients live in the here and now. Therefore, I must give the Screenplay some time. I hope they and their units do prove worth the wait.

Re: Screenplay and Avio observations [In reply to] Can't Post

A very enthusiastic DITTO, Neil. My own experience over the last 20 or so months proves the Cassie totally bulletproof and 100% of my time has been a joy. As it is a Motion JPEG format and rendering is not always up to the analoge tape I used for 15 years...the pre roll from hell using tape sometimes drove me nuts.I havn't touched tape editing since the Cassie.Only green warnings I used to get was using the same clip more than once without making a copy of it first. Never lost a clip ..never crashed..ever. Not an effects junkie but prefer the classic disolve and cuts edits so editing is veeery fast. A few have seen the wisdom of providing an intuative no hastle editor to compete with the Cassie and may they succeed...a better moustrap will forever drift to the top and this competition results in finer tools for us yes? The upcoming Kron Will set another level for stand alone NLEs. I'm looking for FAST split edits...we'll see. Anyone use the Fast 601 yet? Seen it and impressed big time. Perhaps Mr. Joel will put up his alternate site and push his new love. No sweat Joel just do it. Aloha from beautiful downtown Waikiki, Mike
