Hard Drives Can't Post

Hi,
Just a note to say I bought an 8.4 gig Quantum Fireball SE
SCSI hard drive with 50 pins interface from Universal Computer
Distributors for $432. It holds about 37 minutes of DV quality
footage.
It was recommended by Draco and mounted perfectly in the CB
hard drive tray. It did require changing the jumper settings on the harddrive to ID 0 which just meant removng 2 jumpers.
Obviously hard drive prices are in our favor now.
Enjoy,
Morgan

Morgan,
Does this mean its possible to use other available hard drives in the Casablanca rather than the drives sold by DraCo?
If so, does modifying the "jumpers" prevent you from reusing the DraCo drives?
Any other changes occur? Such as image quality, rendering times, etc.?
If what I think you're saying is true, then that 8.4gb you bought for $432.00, could essentially replace DraCo's 9gb at $1200.00.
That would be a significant and much welcomed price break.
Please let

Hi Bill,
Absolutely! These drives are the same as Draco uses and they perform exactly the same. Draco's Quantum Atlas II 9.1 gig
drives sell for $645 if you go to Pricewatch at
http://www.pricewatch.com
Just choose the dealer you want and order and you'll have the drive on your doorstep the next day.
Draco just needs to make some profit understandibly and sells
the smae drives at a markup.
Choose from:
Seagate Barricuda 9.1
Quantum Atlas 9.1
Quantum Fireball SE 8.4
IBM Ultrastar 9.1
Any of these and several others work fine. But keep in mind that
the Cassie has an INTERNAL 50-pin interface where the drive tray slides in and connects. Some of the above drives, except the
Fireball SE, have 68-pin SCSI 3 connectors and must be used
EXTERNALLY via a 68 pin to 25 pin male adaptor cable. This cable
can be ordered also. Look on the back of the Cassie. You'll see
a 25-pin female connector. That is where an external hard drive
connects.
If you want to utilise the internal drive bay, which I prefer,
purchase the Quantum Fireball SE 8.4 gig. I bought it because
Draco told me to. Call them first if you like to verify.
Happy editing,
Morgan Evans

Morgan,
Thanks so much for the info, and also the research you've done on this.
It's good to hear.
I was wondering also, do you know if there are any hard drives available in the 18+gb range, and if so, what's approximate cost?
Thanks so much,
BIll

Hi Bill,
Pricewatch has the IBM 18 gig listed for $1180. and the Seagate
for $1264.
There is also a Quantum Atlas III in the 18.2 gig variety but I haven't found a price on it.
Regards,
Morgan

Hard drive upgrade [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Folks,
Having been used to using the 8.4 gig fast narrow 50-pin HDDs
which are directly compatible(sic) with Cassies 50-pin interface,
how are you folks doing the hookup when using 68 or 80 pin
hard drives? Must it be external or will it somehow adapt
to the 50-pin internal CB connector?
Thanks much,
Morgan Evans

Re: Hard Drives [In reply to] Can't Post

: Hi,
: Well I messed this up the first time I tried so here we go again. Yes you will have to have a scsi interface card and cable as well as a terminator. So you need some major installation information on this & scsi drives to do this. While I'm told an Ide card and a scsi card are supposed to be usable on the
same motherboard at the same time I have never been able to make
it happen & haven't seen it in operation where both ide & scsi
are working So if you elect to use this scsi drive you will
more than likely have to pull the ide drive off your system.
