Color Balance gain kicking in Can't Post

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced similar problems. On Manual white balancing with a VX2000 using a white slate, in a dome port based housing, the camera kicks in huge amounts of grain (gain). Checking the datacode, the Gain level is at 0dB but the image is very grainy. White balancing on land does not replicate this. Can anybody suggest a cause? Would this be controllable on the PD-150/170? I cannot see any reason to blame the housing configuration or lens.
