VHS lines of resolution Can't Post

I have a dumb question. From what I understand, the VHS/8mm format only has about 250 lines of resolution. The average TV has about 400 or so (I think). So when you watch a VHS movie from the video store, why doesn't it look worse than a T.V. show? Is the VHS(eg: movie rental) format different than the VHS camcorder format?

On my TV (five years old), a VHS tape is far, far worst than any T.V. show.
How do you receive your TV signal?
