Whale shark movie now online Can't Post

After 1000 dives in the Andaman Sea I finally got my first whale shark. A 7-8m female at Richelieu Rock with with the top of her tail missing, and she posed very nicely for me.

Check out the video at http://www.bubblevision.com/movie-gallery.htm and please let me know what you think.

What wonderful video! That is a comment on the overall site, not just the whale shark footage, which was itself very well done. I notice that with her escort of divers the whale shark dodn't look lonely.

In the "East of Eden" clip is that a banded sea snake of the "if they bite you there is no anti-venom" variety, or is it something else?

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the kind comments about the video Blush

In the East of Eden that is indeed a banded sea snake (Laticauda colubrina). They are highly venomous but their mouths are very small. I don't know if there is an anti-venom. I assumed there was but maybe there isn't Shocked They are totally oblivious to divers and I've had my camera in there faces on several occasions. I guess they could take a bit if you upset them too much.

There is another type of banded sea snake in the Andaman Sea, I think it's Enhydrina schistosa, and they behave very differently. One of them approached me while I was decompressing in the blue at Black Rock to check me out. That was much more worrying!

From what I have read, and only what I have read, the Laticauda colubrina has a venom about ten times as deadly as a rattlesnake. As you noted, they don't seem to be much of threat to divers. I read one source which suggested that anti-toxin is generally not stocked.

Quote
Most cases of people being bitten by sea snakes involve fishermen bitten when sorting through a catch from a net. The venom is composed of powerful neurotoxins (affect nervous system) and sometimes myotoxins (affect skeletal muscles), with a fatal dose being about 1.5 milligrams. Most sea snakes can produce 10-15 mg of venom.

Nice video of the whale shark! I checked out the octopus video too. Just so you know, you have taped classic behavior of two males (Octopus cyanea) fighting. Maybe the title of that clip should be re-named.

Oops! I'd better change the script of my "Reef Life Of The Andaman" DVD too. Thanks very much for the correction. Would this fight be over a female, or territory, or something else?

I have some video that is very similar. At first I didn't know what was going on but in my video two males are trying to mate with one female. The female moves away and the two males then battle it out trying to turn the opponent literally inside - out. The male that comes out on top seems to be the winner. So, I'm 99% sure what you are seeing in your video are two males fighting and there may or may not be a female nearby. Hope this helps. B.Carlson aka Exallias, Georgia Aquarium.

Magnificent, what an experience to be close to such a huge and benign creature. Would love to do that stuff.

Wow.
