How do I take my still image and make everything B&W but the top of a rose?

Thx

FIRST.... I am NOT a Photoshop Expert.... but I do play one on TV Wink

Take the image and create a duplicate layer...
Desaturate that layer (the duplicate) and now it is B&W
Use your erase tool and erase the part/area that you want the color to show through.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I had figured out another way to do it already, but your way was easier and faster!!
Thanks

Another way would be to select the section you want in color.
Then from the menu Select / Inverse
Than Saturation down to 0.

Never use a destructive method in photoshop. Instead of erasing, use masks instead.

Hi Sal,

can I talk you into a little more detail on that?

Thanks,
James

OK, I tried ALL the suggestions mentioned above and NONE of them worked for me. When I made the whole photo B/W and used the eraser, all it did was reveal a b/w checkerboard pattern beneath.

1. Open image
2. Ctl-A (Select All)
3. Image-Duplicate
4. Click on the top layer in the thumbnails to select it
5. Image-Adjustments-Desaturate

Your image should now be b/w, & the top thumbnail image should also be b/w

6. Select eraser tool & adjust brush size
7. Erase at will

Worked for me & I had never tried it before either!

Re: [James] B&W image, with color rose bud [In reply to] Can't Post

1) Ctrl+J (duplicates the layer)

2) Convert bottom copy to B&W (whatever method you prefer)

3) Add layer mask to top (colored) copy but hold the "alt" key, which will add a mask filled with black (making it hidden)

4) Make sure the mask is selected and start painting back IN the color of the rose using a white brush.

I like this method because: a) It's non-destructive (if you get a little sloppy just hit "x" to swap to a black brush and paint the mask back in over the area you messed up) and b) It's easier to paint a color IN rather than blot all other colors out.

a rather sloppy example (completed in roughly 120 seconds):

No problem. As you see there is a million and one ways to do any particular thing in PS. This just happened to be the most efficient to me.
