CS2...How to PS to Vector ... Can't Post

Gray moment...
How do I take a PS design and convert the layers to vector format for output in another app?
Thanks,
Laura

Adobe Streamline is the program most often mentioned for this task. Haven't used it myself; my equivalent is a Corel vectorizing utility.

They don't make Streamline anymore.

So in Corel draw you can take a detailed logo made in PS
and convert it all to a vector drawing?

if you are looking for a line drawing of your logo. You would do this in Illustrator CS2.

photoshop is a raster graphic program not a vector program. However, you do have the ability to create vector graphics by using paths and shapes. Text also behaves as a vector, until you rasterize the text.

You cannot convert a raster graphic into a vector using photoshop. Unless you redraw each shape and line yourself using paths and shapes.

Illustrator however, is able to convert a raster(aka bitmap) graphic into a vector. But depending on the graphic, it will either do a very good job or a very bad one. In other words, if you give it a simple logo, it will do a better job converting into a vector than a picture that has a lot of detail.

What is it that you are working on? perhaps we can give you further advice on what you can try.

In theory, yes. In practice, I've never found the Corel bitmap-to-vector converter to work very well.

I got that...I just knew there was a way to do some kind of conversion, but had never done it before.
I'm affraid this particular logo will have to be recreated.
Thanks for the info guys.

Laura, a logo shouldn't be too hard to "vectorize". Here's a Photoshop tutorial I found that could be of help to you: http://www.heathrowe.com/tuts/vector.asp

I understand with Illustrator CS2 there is a trace tool that works very intuitively.
Hopefully we will be able to utilise this to capture this logo. It's a very detailed one.
Thanks for the tut!

Not to my knowledge. Maybe they added this feature in cs2? or it was done through a 3rd party plug-in?

Adobe tries not to give photoshop to many vector options because if they did, nobody would buy illustrator.

Also, streamline did an "ok" job, but sharp corners were always rounded no matter how finely tuned you made it. I would imagine that any other conversion utility would have similar issues.

I wish they would just combine it and charge more Sal.

Actually they have something called Live Trace.
Works ok I guess. I've never used it as I don't
have the latest version of Illustrator.

Thanks for the updates guys.

Re: [Laura K] CS2...How to PS to Vector ... [In reply to] Can't Post

Here are a couple of options. In Photoshop, you can select areas of your image and make them work paths in the paths tab. Once you have made all of your selections paths, you can export them as paths to illustrator, and then open them in illustrator as vector art. When you open the image in illustrator, it usually appears as an empty image. On the PC type ctrl-A on the Mac hit Command-A to select all, and you will see your paths which are usually transparent in color and then fill them in with a color of your choosing. Your results will vary depending on the complexity of the image. Simple stuff works pretty well, complicated images with overlapping imagery is usually awful and unusable. This will usually only give you a starting point in which you can modify in Illustrator to hopefully achieve the look you want depending on your comfort with bezier curves and using illustrator.

The other option, which is only available in Illustrator CS2 to my knowledge, is the live trace feature which was once adobe streamline, now incorporated into this program. Open your image or place it into a document, and then select the image and run the live trace feature (under objects menu I believe). There are several options you can play around with until it achieves at least a "close" approximation of the image. Again, the simpler the conversion, the better results.

I hope this helps.

You could do this using Flash as well, believe it or not. The 'trace bitmap' feature would do it in a jiffy.

edit: just looked at the date of the original post Blush Guess you got it figured out by now.
