Creating a fire effect Can't Post

Ok, I'm using Sony Vegas and I'm a bit of a noob at at but I'm very good with Photoshop. CS and 7.0. So, my question is that i want to create a sort of fire transition effect in my video to change scenes (i.e. the edges or entire clip burn away to show the next clip). Any tips on how I would do this is appreciated. I have no problem dealing with time consuming methods or anything. Thanks.

Cut some card to shape, burn it and film it. Fire effects always look better from real life.

That's a cool idea, I'll try it but any digital options?

Found a program called particleillusion, I might use that for a digital option...any other tips are cool still though.

I'm not a Vegas guy, but if you're good with photoshop and if Vegas can use custom alpha map transitions, then create a grayscale alpha matte with a series of gradients that look like burn marks.
Import it into Vegas (again, I don't even know what Vegas can and can't do) and use it as a custom alpha map transition.

Here's a quickie one I did with Edius just to show you what I mean...

Maybe a combination... I'm sure i've found this effect on some tutorial site before, but I just came across this, which might help:

and an old one:

There's a stock footage CD called Pyromania that had exactly the type of effects (using real fire) you describe. Try Googleing for it.
