Help! Photoshop Elements; Opens scanned .tif's as background images, cannot unlock to edit???? Can't Post

I just scanned in about 110 pictures for a photo montage (needs to be delivered in 10 minutes). I made the video, no problem.

But now I want to make a background in DVDArchitect, using one of the pictures I scanned. I scanned them as .tif's for the first time; I normally scan as .jpg.

Well, when I open up any of the scanned pictures in PhotoShop Elements, it opens them as a "background" layer. Background layers are "locked", and must be coverted into a New Layer before doing any kind of editing. However, when I double-click the layer in the palette to convert it into a new layer, it's giving me the following message:

"You cannot convert a 16-bit background into a new layer."

I tried saving the file as different formats, but still the same error. I just can't figure out how to unlock the images. In the mean time, I guess I'll go back and re-scan the image I want as a .jpg.

Thanks!

shouldn't this be in the photoshop section?

Anyways, I believe your problem should be fixed if you change the mode settings.

Go to IMAGE>>MODE
make sure it's at RGB and you can try changing it to 8bit.

let us know if that works for you.

Have you tried changing to 8-bit instead?
Image/Mode/8-bit

Hmmm

Don't feel bad, Rusty. I also didn't know about the photoshop section. I am going to check it out right away. Wink

Cheers

FYI - save it as bitmap first. Just open the TIF in photoshop cs, and save as bmp. Then open the bitmap file, change the mode and you'll be off and running.

Strange coincidence, but I was messing with TIF files for about 3 hours the other day at work for scanning large blueprints. The xerox only scanned TIF files, which is fine, but I need to make the final pics smaller than the actual TIF. When i opened the TIF file in Photoshop CS and changed the mode and then did whatever, the quality came out bad.

I started experimenting, and discovered that if i changed the original file from TIF to Bmp, then opened the bmp and THEN changed the mode, the final converted jpg came out MUCH better. The bmp file will be much larger than the original TIF; however, I was making the necessary changes to the bmp version, then converting it to jpg. For some reason the quality of the final jpg was MUCH better than going straight from TIF to mode to jpg...

Let me know how your's turns out.
