How to make a gradient from one picture to another? Can't Post

I've got PS 7.0 and would like to know how to do a gradient from one picture to another or to a clear alfa channel? My son and I figured out how to to it with solid colors but don't know how to do it with two pictures or even one picture.

masks are the answer(assuming I understood your question)

Basically you have the two layers on top of each other and add a "layer mask"(layer>>addlayer mask) to the top layer.

Grab your gradient tool and make a b&w gradient. The part that is pure black(0,0,0) would be fully transparent. Pure white(255,255,255) would be fully visible. Any values inbetween would vary in opacity.

Take a look at the following image. Also when working with masks, make sure you click on the mask. Otherwise when you add a gradient, you will be effecting the image itself.

I use masks for everything. I never use the eraser tool because of it's destructive nature. With the masks, it is undestructive. That means if I wish to use parts of the image that are "hidden"(not erased) I can go back and reveal these elements.

masks(and other non-destructive methods) are your friend(s)

Storm,

It works the same way...

Select the layer your picture is on, At the bottom of the Layer Pallet you will click the "Add Layer Mask" (2nd button from left) button. This will create the mask. Next ensure the layer mask is selected and choose the Gradiant tool (Keyboard shortcut "G"). With the gradiant tool selected you will look at the top of your work area and fine tune the type of Gradiant you want to make (iris, straight, banded, etc...). You can also select a color gradiant or an alpha (Black --> White) gradiant.

To fade the picture, select the Black/White Gradiant. On your picture, Click-Hold and drag to the end of your desired gradiant and release the mouse button. This will fade the image. Black will be transparent and White will reveal the image.

If you didn't get the fade you were looking for or it was in the wrong direction use "CTRL+Z" to undo the action and then try again until you get it in the direction you desire.

Thanks for the reply Sal & Jesse! Very much appreciated. I'll give them a try tomorrow after I build the DVD I'm working on. I have two weeks to try and get three weddings edited! yikes!

Good job. PS just takes a little work, but once you get it, you'll wonder how you lived without it. I'm now working on Illustrator...

I like the gradients in the cover. I really can't see the text very well on the cover. May I suggest something with a little more contrast? You can also do some nice with my mixing script and block fonts both in the same line of text or on the overall cover.

Just providing some suggestions...

it depends, does elements have masks?

If not then, a feathered eraser would allow you to do it.

Maybe lighten the area behind the Title on the front cover. The giant drop shadows seem to be tangling the text visually.

Yep, same applies for Photoshop Elements...at least in the latest version that recently came out (2.0?). Not sure about previous versions. Good luck!
