Question for you PS Gurus	Can't Post

I am fairly adept for a videographer at the functionality and abilities of photoshop but one function I have always wanted and not been able to find in PS is the equivalent of an NLE's vectorscope and waveform monitor. I am very comfortable color correcting in my NLE with these tools and would love to have visual monitors to show the changes in photoshop.

Is there such a thing in Photoshop?

I can see histograms when I am playing around with levels but it doesn't tell me a whole lots. A vectorscope color wheel kinda gauge would be great. Does a Histogram work like that with colors? If so I will have to learn how they work if I can find a color histogram.

I'm not aware of any vector-scope type of thing in photoshop. Are you looking at color correcting for skin tones? If so, I recommend the book "Skin" for digital photography. It goes over TONS of ways to color correct, enhance, modify, etc. with the focus on skin tones.

What you basically look for is a balance of CMYK on properly exposed skin tones. M and Y should be fairly close to each other, and C should be roughly 1/2 to 1/3 the value of the M amount. This is a "general" statement, though, because shadows make a difference, and the type of skin tones the person has also makes a difference.

Again, I recommend the book.

Hey Philip... no such thing in PS since PS doesn't care about the color spectrum of broadcast video (obviously it goes beyod that) but there are plug-ins available that would emulate the characteristics of vectorscope and waveform monitor in PS so that you could control video leves if you produce graphics for your videos.

I kinda figured that. Since I don't do photography seriously I haven't got the utility that syncs my screen to be true for color photography work. In video I can tell what is going on based on the scopes and know that I am pretty close without a full blown production monitor....in fact I don't even use an external monitor at all. Everything is right in the NLE. It took me a few years but I have gotten pretty good at understanding what the scopes are telling me. I was hoping there was something similar in PS.

So what are these plugins you are talking about? Just curious.

Well, I guess there IS kind of something similar in PS...you get a color calibrator, stick it on your screen, and run it through the calibration process. Then whatever you see on your screen is exactly what will come out on the print. Tongue

I believe there is even one by Adobe (second thought: it might only be for AfterEffects)
