WHere do I start? Can't Post

I can hack away at things using Fireworks, but it seems like the world uses Photoshop so it might be time to switch. Also, I need to start doing more of my own graphics (not just for video, print too!!) and some photo retouching.

So can anyone suggest a great book or DVD to learn Photoshop creative aspects? I am pretty computer literate, and can figure out many of teh basics, but I just don't have alot of design sense. I am terrible at selecting matching colors, fonts, things like that. I guess I would need some photoshop stuff too, so maybe I need two books, one on CS2 and one on design basics.

What would you guys and gals recommend?

I can second that recommendation. Definitely one of the best technical books I've ever read. It's great that it's aimed at editors because it becomes quickly practical for the tasks you need it for, and then you can transfer those skills over to DVD insert designs and such.

I probably need some skills specific to video, but my real issue is that I just can't find a graphic artist to do my brochures and business cards at a professional level and a reasonable rate. And it would be nice to be able to do better DVD covers. It looks like I am going to start with the Adobe Classroom in a book and a book called Designing for non-designers. But thanks for the suggestions. When I start wanting to step up my video stuff beyond adequate but not fancy lower thirds, I will probably get this book.

I believe you live in SW Florida, (I do too, I work in Englewood.) I use Photoshop, Elements, and there are a lot of resources for learing "hands on," to compliment the book learning, for reasonable prices in our area. I have been going to some classes and also camera club meetings and they all use photoshop elements or cs. Send me a private message and we can discuss specifics if your are interested.
