how to change dpi on a still? Can't Post

anyone have instructions on how to change the dpi on a still frame exported from FCP to Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Elements and making it 300dpi?

Is it possible to do it Elements or do i need Photoshop for this?

How do I check the dpi on the still to start?

TIA.

changing it to 300dpi will have no effect on the still. It will not make it better for printing. The only thing that would change is the file size.

With that out of the way, you can change it by going to image>>image size THEN changing the resolution from 72 to 300. Again, this will not make your image any clearer or better resolution. So, unless you have a good reason to change it to 300(adding text for example) your are just wasting time and disk space.

thanks sal. kinkos insists that i need to have the file at 300dpi for them to print it. i told them the original is 72dpi and i don't have an interpolating software so what does it matter? but they insisted. so voila.

i am adding text to the still so i know the image will be somewhat blurry, but the text shouldn't be right?

Ahhh but you left out ONE important point. Make sure "Resample Image" is NOT checked. if it is- changing the resolution WILL affect the physical dimensions.

Being in the printing business myself, printers always scream about anything less than 300dpi and I see it all the time where the customer just resizes the image and calls it good. Basically as long as your image is good thats all the matters.

You have probably figured this out by now but, anyway. If you add the text while the image is at 72 dpi then the text will be at 72 dpi no matter if you increase the overall pixels to 300. The quality will still be the same. However, you text will be crisp if you change the dpi to 300 then add the text.

Hope this helps
