how to save pixel aspect ratio? Can't Post

I'm getting some images ready for my website. When I exported some of them awhile back, I must have exported them with the wrong pixel size. I can change the pixel aspect ratio in Photoshop CS but it only seems to be for the purpose of viewing in the program. If I open the pics up outside of this program they are wide again. How do I go about saving the size permanantly?

When I open the image now it will say (scaled) in the top of the box.

Any help would be appreciated!

Annie

Pixel aspect ration is a display option, not a save option. A pixel is a pixel is a pixel - a spot of color information. The program that is displaying it can distort it to be longer/shorter to correct for the "aspect ratio".

Depending on the application you are pulling it into, you may have to "stretch" or "squish" the image in photoshop so that when it is changed to a different ratio by a video program the image gets stretched/squished the correct amount for viewing (hence the "scaled" message).

What program are you opening it up in?

To add to what Postal said...

Pixel aspect ratio is a feature that allows you to automatically correct images that come from, or are destined for, video. Standard definition video uses non-square pixels. They're about 10% taller than they are wide, like little dominos set on their small ends. HDTV pixels are stretched in the other direction, and look like dominos set on their long sides. Computer pixels are square. So, if you're moving a still frame of DV video between the two, it's going to look squished (either horizontally or vertically, depending on which direction you're going, from Photoshop to video, or from video to Photoshop). Prior to the CS version, you had to do the correction manually; now it's automatic.

If video isn't a part of your current project, you don't need the PAR feature turned on.

I am only having this problem with some old images exported from Avid. I guess I have my settings correct now. But when I open them with CS and change the pixel aspect ratio they are fine. Then, I'll view them with IE or the fax viewer and they are stretched lengthwise again. I just don't want to give them to the website guy like this for him to bill me for fixing the problem. I guess I need to squish their canvas size. Thanks to both of you!
