2 mics into 1 iriver question Can't Post

I have never tried this, but I plan on using this setup for the reception this weekend.

E604 with xlr to mini placed next to band's speaker with iriver mounted to the mic stand.
Rode M3 placed somewhere in font of the band with 20' xlr cable run over to iriver (on 604 stand) with xlr to mini adapter on end of 20' run.

My question is, what kind of adapter to use to connect both mic's to the iriver? Will a headphone splitter from Radio Shack work ok?

I would like to hear from anyone else that has used a similar setup?

Thanks
Tim

Just use a normal 1/8 inch "Y" splitter. I use this to split a feed from a wireless to my cam, and also to an iRiver.

But if you have 2 iRivers you'd be better off using one for each mic. That 2 mic mix going into a single unit will be potentially screwed up from the start... no way to seperate one bad feed from the other.

FWIW... I've never been able to get a decent music recording using any kind of mic on those things. Getting dialog with a lav is great though.

I've always wanted to hook up 1 Azden mic to 2 iRivers placed inside the groom's pocket. I figured it would be great for backing up each other.

I would stay away from using a splitter on this type of setup as, IMO, it wll probably be a recipe for disaster on a couple of different levels. First off, ideally you would want to feed each signal to a field mixer. This will give you control over the two seperate feeds- and give a better chance for the iRiver to handle the recording. With that said, I suppose some people have had some success using the iRiver in this fashion to capture a rather high mic level feed...but the chance of getting anything worth using would be iffy at best. The pre-amp circuit on the iRiver was never designed for this type of use.

You may have success though...especially with the RODE M3 mic if you select the -20dB pad to drop the level going into the iRiver....

I would suggest doing a test of the system before the gig...the easiest way would be to place the mics in front of your home stereo system and crank volume on the stereo to a level just short of having the neighbors calling the cops....this should tell if your mics/setup will be able to not only handle the high spl load, but see if you have enough lattitude with setting the levels on the iRiver....

Good luck :-)

I read a post in another forum where somebody does this but uses 2 mics and 2 iRivers for true redundancy.

I split the groom's lav mic to both my wireless and an iRiver. It works pretty well but if the mic goes I'm screwed. I've never heard of a mic failing though. I use tape to keep things snug.

Re: [Mark Foley] 2 mics into 1 iriver question [In reply to] Can't Post

I have used the 604 and iriver at a few reception with live bands. It doesn't clip or distort but the music just doesn't sound right, the dialogue sounds good. I thought it was because the band didn't run the drums and horns threw the mixer but maybe it's the iriver. Would a Edirol or Zoom work with this setup?

I did a test last night. I placed the 604 next to the speaker and the M3 in the middle of the room and cranked it. The M3 had a little echo, but when I separated the 2 channels in Vegas I turn the M3 down a little and it didn't sound to bad.

So should I try this setup or go with just the M3?

I do have an extra iriver, so each mic could have it's own iriver. I just didn't want the extra work of trying to keep the two files in sync.

Thanks
Tim

Typically, in a small venue, bands will run very little through the PA...mostly vocals and therefore the audio will be void of instuments. You will need to run addional mic(s) to capture the rest of the instruments to get a full sound.

If you don't have access to a mixer, your best bet would be to run two iRivers. If your using the M3 to capture intruments not going through the PA, try to get as close as possible with the mic

I double mic every groom with two iRivers. If he complains I tell him it's for stereo. It's saved me a couple of times when one of the iRivers failed.
