Audio clip from this weekends wedding using the Edirol R09 Can't Post

This is my second wedding with the Edirol R09 and I am very impressed with its capabilities. This clip was recorded with 2 R09s, one on the vocalist and the other on the monitor of the electic piano. I mixed the two in an Adobe timeline and exported a segment into the sample clip. There was no editing or sweetening of the audio, this is the raw recorded clip. The vocalist was one of the best I've heard at any wedding.

The clip was recorded at 24bit/48khz. The AGC was set to on. (not sure if that is the best setting but so far it has worked nicely)

Listen to it here

Sounds good. How was the sync?

Syncs have become pretty easy for me. I just find the first or a frame of the clip on the timeline that has an easily identifiable note or sound and match the other timeline to the same point.

Sounds real good Shane. What mics were you using?

Sorry Ron, I used the Rode NT4 to mic the piano and the R09 microphone to mic the singer.

Good clean capture Shane...you have good material to work with and with post audio mix/sweetening, it should really come alive....

I think so too, that Edirol is amazing and so easy to use... I have a question for you Mark.

In our events I usually have my assistant setup the audio. In last weekends event I think he positioned the microphone a little too close to the speaker and the audio sounded a little hot but not peaking. He had the unit set to Automatic Gain Control (AGC on) Is it wise to use AGC? His theory is that we usually cannot monitor the sound for some events until after our cameras are positioned and we are filming (such as a ceremony) and there is no way to monitor the audio input. Therefore the says AGC is wise to use... I agreed but wanted your opinion on that.

I don't own the R-09 so I can't speak for the performance of the AGC circuit. AGCs can be problem children...as they tend to pump the audio (either up/down) depending on the source intesity. However, if your recording a rather steady sound source, such as music, AGC may work just fine. Once again it really depends on the individual recorder. I tend to lean towards using limiters (on my Marantz and Edirol R4) as they prevent the signal from overloading but don't mess with it when not needed. With that said though, the limiter circuit on the H2 is less than ideal.

The trick with recording digital is to set the recording level high enough to get it above the recorder's noise floor but not set too high to ever let it clip...so I always record a bit soft. It would be nice if we could do a constant audio monitor....

I would recommend against AGC on most recorders. The reason being that the noise floor will have a tendancy to pump up and down.
When I use my R09 to mic PA stacks, I set the preamp to low for very loud situations or leave it as be and set my recoding levels arounf 12-18 on the unit. The R09 has pretty decent pre amps in it so I haven't had much clipping with this setup. I normally use either my Rode NT3 mic or AT822 stereo mic (normally) to record into the R09. I just like the sound of those external mics better than the onboard R09 mics. Personal preference.

Lately I have been using my R09 plugged into the soundboard and my new Zoom H2 in dual 2CH stereo mode to record the PA stack in the front of the unit and the crowd audio in from the backside of the unit. I have been very happy thus far with this setup. For my shoot this Sunday, I had the H2 and wireles handheld (sent to my camera) on a mic stand micing the PA stack. And the R09 taking the board feed from the DJ. All in all, I got 3 great audio sources to work with. Overkill for most, but nice peace of mind for myself.

Also, just so you know, you can take a wireless feed fom your R09's headphone out port and send that to one of your cmaeras for backup monitoable audio. just make sure that you pad the signal going into your wireless transmitter, as it will be a hot line signal.

That is good to know... but how do I pad the wireless transmitter? With a delimiter? Sadly, when my other audio gear was stolen the limiters where in the box with the rest of the stuff.

Depending on your wireless setup. Some wireless have -10/-20/-30 padding available on the units themselves. If not simply pickup something like this AT8202 In-Line Attenuator. Then set it to either -10/-20 db.
