Cake Cutting Audio (Round Table Discussion) Can't Post

How about a round table discussion about capturing audio at the cake cutting....

For me...I've started placing an iRiver out of camera sight (both photog and myself) to capture the small talk at somewhat close range. I tend to shoot a bit away from the cake to give the photog his/her time with the couple (and I like to capture that interaction) and also lets their guests have a good view of the couple. Using onboard mics can get ambiance noise/crowd, however, the B&G can get lost at the noise floor. The iRiver allows me that close-proximity audio. I have even used the iRiver set only with the internal mic and mixed with the other audio works just fine. Usually though I just have a wrapped giant squid omni mic in use....

...others.....

Typically I shoot straight on facing the bride/groom and the camera mic does a pretty good job of getting them. Sometimes they get lost, but IMO, its not one of those moments when you have to hear every word they say.

I just use the camera mounted shotgun, and sometimes I'll mix in some audio from the e604 on the DJ's speaker, if he's not playing something stupid. Laugh

It's rare that I ever see the B&G ever actually say anything, and since it's only like 60 seconds of footage, I don't spend a lot of time on it. And for the highlights, I drop the audio from the cake cutting completely, since they don't say anything anyways. Often, there's not even any real ambient audio to use, since the GOOD DJ's don't invite all the guests to gather around the table to take pictures, which pisses me off.

The shotgun mic at least isolates the B&G a little better than a built-in camera mic, where all you can hear is the photog saying,"KISS, KISS, KISS", or some whale of a redneck woman screaming in your left ear,"RUB ID IN HIS FACE, RUB ID IN HIS FACE!" Crazy

I'm always open to suggestions, however.

FORTUNATELY, the last few DJ's have said something on the lines of "Now for the cake cutting, grab your cameras and gather around, BUT please leave room for the professional Photographers and VIDEOGRAPHERS!" I was floored the first time I heard that then thanked the guy!

I "almost" dug out my shotgun for this Saturday but my kit was 10 feet away and I was using it to prop open the lid. Laugh

Besides, the cake chatter is just the silly-assed cake lady and photog instructing the inept couple on how to hold a knife and slice. I don't use any natural audio from this thing in my edit. If anything, it's usually the drunk crowd hollering, "Big piece! Right in his face!".
