Don't get rid of those iRivers just yet... Can't Post

I have a corporate shoot this friday and monday. It is a unique situation, in that I have to mic two groups. One group of four and one of two.

They will be sitting facing each other. I've done this before with two hypers and have gotten mediocre sound. I decided to try it a different way. I wanted to put lavs on everyone. The problem...I can't affort 6 wireless systems. So, I decided to go with wired. For $160, I picked up lavs and mini to xlr cables to run to my Edirol R44.

The lavs are dynamic so I bought them assuming that I wouldn't need phantom. Wrong...and right. They don't need phantom, but their sensitivity is so low that they need some preamp voltage to boost the signal.

I'm screwed, I'm thinking. But of course, I reach out to our resident audio guru, Mark Foley.

Mark suggests that I run the lavs to my iRivers, let the iRivers act as a preamp, run cable from the headphone jack to the R44. Voila! All the signal I need.

What a great idea! The great thing is, I can record on the iRiver and have some redundancy, or just out to the R44 and the iRiver will run forever.

Why not rent a mixer from a music store? Run the wired mics to the mixer then output to the R44 or to a camera.

I have one Bob...the problem is without any phantom voltage, the signal is too low. At 48v the signal is too hot. The iRivers put out something like 5v (or close to that).

Right - 48v would be too much for your dynamic mics. Makes sense.

I did the same thing for a deposition video I did a couple of months ago.

Doesn't the mixer have a phantom on it? My mixer that I use at weddings has phantom buttons for each mic input.

Brian,
Yes it does, but like I said, 48v is too hot.
