Mark was talking to me today about it.

A little birdie told him that they would be shipping out the first shipment Friday.

Waiting on mine to arrive now.

Edit, I was just notified that my H2 is being shipped out tomorrow. Smile

It's certainly at a nice price-point for the quality you get. I hope it has some sort of shock absorption, unlike the iRivers. You can drop an iRiver from just a few inches and it will most likely void the recording in progress every time.

It maybe just a matter of getting to your order....
They had over 400 pre-orders to process/ship and they were working on first in/first out

Hi Tim, first I've hear about this product. It looks kind of large to put on the groom, and what's is the advantage over the irivers?
Inform the masses on how you will utilize it for weddings. Thanks Tim-O

Re: [stevemoses] H2 Zoom is out! [In reply to] Can't Post

Steve,
It is not much bigger than a pack of cigarettes...advantages- able to record at very high fidelity (96kHz/24bit uncompressed) versus .mp3 for the iRiver ...removable media....and quadruple mic capsule, which enables various types of surround recording, including a matrixed format that stores 360° information into four tracks for later extraction into 5.1...

edit...
Uses for wedding- once we figure the best ext. mic for this baby, you can use it to mic the groom/officiant...has line-in capability so you can tap into sound systems and record at high fidelity...and (the biggie for me anyways), is the 360° capture capability...open up some unique surround sound ambient records at the reception...etc....

Re: [stevemoses] H2 Zoom is out! [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Steve,

Regarding wedding work, it's about the same size as your average wireless mike, so totally acceptable for miking a groom.

It has far higher fidelity for capturing quality audio like string quartets, soloists, etc and I am thinking it will make a good recorder at receptions as well.

I also think it will be the cat's meow for quality audio capture at concerts, recitals, etc.

I am waiting for some indepth, hands on reports, reviews from some of the more audio inclined members to see if the stats hold up in the field regarding ease of use, fidelity, audio sync accuracy in post edit, etc.

I also like the removeable medium (SD cards) to be able to do multiple site capture during the day without worrying about theft robbing me of my material as well as the recorder itself.

Re: [stevemoses] H2 Zoom is out! [In reply to] Can't Post

Steve as Mark said, it shouldn't really be much larger than the Edirol R09 that I use for groom officiant micing. And, as what Mark also said, the R09 is about the size of a deck of cards and easily fits into a pocket. This might be the small device that I have been waiting for, as I love my Zoom H4 (XLR inputs) but it's far too large to use on a person. the H2 should give me much more recording flexibility than the R09 (due to it's 4 mic capsule), which will enable me to record 360 degrees for a surround mix. As you can see the H2 looks a lot like a mic in itself, so I should be able to place the mic on a mic stand in the middle of an band or quartet and get
360 degree recording with one recorder and no external mic needed.

Also the unit will have different mic record ability, which can simulate different types of popular mics. For a ceremony, I can place it on a groom or officiant with a lav mic, use it to record musicians on a mic stand, place it on a podium for readings and more. You can essentially use it in the same manner as an IRiver, but have more flexibility for recording, as you have no need for an external mic, as well as have teh ability to get 24/96 WAV recording to removable SD media (much much better than MPS recording).

For reception use, you could either take a line feed via 1/8 line in, or use the built in mics as needed. Also unlike an IRiver, you can send your captured signal right to your camera via wireless (Line out) for backup sync audio, all at the same time.

Re: [MLiebergot] H2 Zoom is out! [In reply to] Can't Post

The way you guys are drooling over this iRiver killer... it almost sounds "too good" for just $200. (Yeah, I know you haven't seen one yet).

I really hope it's everything you say it is... God knows we need it. And who knows... by the time my iRivers are defunct these things might be going for $30 on ebay. Laugh

But it doesn't sound like it'll be a hit with the mainstream public. The iRivers were aimed at the mp3 portable listening market which means they sold and manufactured a gazillion of them. We were just a niche market that found another use for them. I'm just wondering what Zoom's strategy is with this thing priced so low. All it can do is carve into the H4 line. And limited sales will doom it for sure because tapers and videogs alone surely can't sustain it.

I'd like nothing more than to get about 4 or 5 of these things to replace my wireless units and get all my audio off cam. (All for about the cost of one Senn G2 system whose frequencies will be "iffy" in a few years).

I still think a lot of videogs won't spend the money on
it when they're use to iRiver pricing.

Brack correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the IRivers retailing for $199 for the 1GB version.
The H2 will provide much more record ability then the IRivers ever did. And considering you get the option of using removabel SD mdeia cards with up to 4GB in size. The it will most likely be a no brainier for videographers for an IRiver replacement.

After all lets face it, most videographers are cheap when it comes to purchasing equipment, especially audio. And as such, I see this little unit being a huge hit with event folks, just for price alone.

If the unit even performs half as good as it might, then it will still surpass what the IRivers ever were.
Remember, I was never a real fan of the IRiver units, as many failed on me. Not to mention the audio was never up to par for me, except for vocal (speech) capture.

Re: [MLiebergot] H2 Zoom is out! [In reply to] Can't Post

The only Achilles heel on the iRivers that I have experienced is the was they lose a recording when you accidentally drop them before you've finalized the recording. Even a drop of a few inches may reset the unit and your recording is lost forever. If they didn't do that, I'd stick with them forever. I'm assuming the H2 is better built and can handle a decent drop. It does look a bit clunky for lavalier use, but it will make a great recorder for the other reasons people have mentioned, especially surround sound.

Brack,

I don't think it is a case of iRiver versus H2 as you can't get the iRivers any more except used so if the H2 shows itself to be a feasible alternative it might become the defacto replacement choice as iRivers die and cannot be replaced.

Well geez Dirk... then quit dropping them. LaughLaugh

I don't know of too many things that are 100% bounce-proof when they hit the floor. And what's this "finalizing" you're referring to with the iRivers? You mean if you don't press "stop" the recording won't be there? News to me. What happens if a battery craps out?

If the H2 will stay in sync with your video it will be a big hit among videographers. That's the one thing I really dislike about the H4, although it's fairly easy to overcome in post. Whos going to be the first to give us a clap test?

Getting reliable, refurbished iRivers that qualify (mike jack, actually working, etc.) is getting very problematical without even getting into "good as new".

So the H4 does not keep sync?

I doubt if the H2 does then.
