Line out from Edirol R44 to Canon A1 Can't Post

I am a new user. I have just bought the above equipment - might as well shoot for the stars!!

I have been silly enough to agree to tape a piano performance this Sunday (not for money!)

My question is: I believe the R44 can have a line-out to a camera. In that scenario, will this audio track (ie on the camera DV tape) now become the audio track that is used for final editing, or is it simply used for syncing or backup purposes (ie the audio file should still be exported from the Edirol via USB to PC). If someone could clarify this I would be very grateful before I make an ass of myself on the day.

By the way, Michael Liebergot recommended the R44 - thanks Michael - a fantastic unit and easy to operate. Sturdy, well built and seemingly excellent audio quality. Good recording times too from the 4 AA batteries it seems.

Many thanks for your help.....

Bryan,
Great pick for a recorder...probably the best recorder, giving its capability, for the money for the event videographer.

You can do either...however, depending on your recording parameters, (record at least 48Khz/24 bit), the R44 recoding will be of higher fidelity and probably will be a bit quieter (although Canon does have good audio circuits). My recommendation would be to use the camera track as sync only.

What type of microphone(s) will be using? One of the beauties of the R44 is to record using both the analog and internal mics. Depending on the actual physical location of the recorder, you could also record using the internal mics and mix that track in post. A few weddings ago I did just this...used a Shure Beta 87A to record the piano directly...(I placed the mic over top of the strings of the piano pointing towards them from about 18" above) and had the R44 next to the musician and recorded both the shure and the internal mics...got a very robust sound....

Hi Mark, thanx for your response on this. I will be using a pair of Audio Technica 2020 (large diaghram model) mics to give a stereo effect. One directed to the bass strings and one to the higher strings. I thought this might give me a similar result (even though of course these are not "high end" mics) to using an expensive stero mic such as a Rode.

Interesting idea about using the internal mic as well. I wonder why it gives a more "robust sound? It will be interesting to see how things turn out - the piano is a $150,000 Steinway!! So it would be nice to get a good result.

Maybe robust wasn't the best choice...but it gave it more of a live feel (when mixed/played with the video and the brain's interpretation of what it is seeing/hearing).

Can't go wrong with 2020...bet you'll get a great capture....

I'm heartended that you don't seem to think the 2020's are too bad. I'll try the mixed approach.

Will let you know how it goes Mark.

The beauty of the 4 channel recording approach is if the internal mics don't perform as expected...just toss it. I would suggest getting the recorder placed close to the piano. Probably add some compression and sweeten with EQ in post.

Re: [Mark Foley] Line out from Edirol R44 to Canon A1 [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks Mark.

I do have one dilemna. I am about to head off to the piano recital and I am confused about the recording levels - SENS and Level. I am trying to test the recording dials. Whenever the LEVEL dial goes past about 11 O'clock there is lot of "fuzziness" I can hear through the phones - and this comes through on playback.

The manual says to turn the dials up until the Clip point (C) is reached but if I do that the fuzziness will increase all the more! OR is this fuzziness supposed to be edited out afterwards?? Hope you can help!!

As an addendum to my previous post, admittedly I am testing in a quiet room with no piano - perhaps this is simply ambient room "noise" which is replaced when there is decent sound (or voices) goinginto the mics?

Will you get the "fuzziness" without anything hooked up? Remember you must set the inner level first...sound like you may have the input signal adjustment way too hot
