Marantz 620 Weirdness Can't Post

So I know that some of you have a 620. I upgraded the firmware off the site and then started experiencing something very weird. Basically when I would record with an external mic the unit would power off automatically. After some experimenting I discovered that the unit was getting major feedback because when you use an external mic the little speaker on the back was still active while recording (which I think is dumb) but normal according to the tech support. What was not normal was the fact that even if you mute the volume to the speaker, it was still outputting sound and which would cause the feedback and cause the unit to shut off. This was not normal.

To make a short story long, the tech support guy, Bill, who was great, emailed me some top secret Wink beta firmware which fixed the problem.

The other thing the beta firmware did was change many of the menu options, which he warned me about in advance. But boy do I like the changes. The best one of all is now when you select a preset it does not take you directly to the edit menu, it instead gives you three options: "Select", "Edit", or drum-roll "Rename". This was something that in my short time with this unit I really thought needed improved. I really like it!

I will be using the 620 with the AT822 this weekend and I will be sure to report back.

Sinnce I've never hooked up anything but a MT830 lav mic to the 620, the audio through the speaker has been nothing more of a verification everything is running. However, I could see as more powerful signals are coming through, it would be a concern. Glad the firmware cared for it. Like the idea of naming presets...that is cool.

in reviewing articles on the marantz 620 there is mention of a delay in the sound being recorded when monitoring the headphones, one review referenced the latest firmware eliminates the delay.

can you confirm the latest firmware eliminate the delay?

I am editing the video right now but I can say that the 620 with the AT822 is a great combo. The brother of the bride is a classic pianist and played his toast. I just set up the AT822 on the piano and let it roll. It sounds great.

I will be doing a blog post soon to tell my brides about this new piece of gear. I will post some samples.
