Need Audio Scrubbing Tips: Stupid Car Alarm Can't Post

Hi everyone!

Do any of you have some good tips or suggestions to remove a car alarm sound from the background of an audio clip? I'm still learning all the tools within Soundtrack Pro, but I need to finish the project this weekend, and would love to know of any possible shortcuts. Is there a way to isolate the particular frequency and remove it? Or, am I being too hopeful? ;) Thankfully, it's a short clip, but it's during a key moment, so I'd like to keep it if all possible. Unfortunately, it picked up loud and clear on three separate audio sources. :(

Thanks in advance. :)

I seriously doubt you can remove such a dynamic sound as a car alarm without severely hammering the wanted audio....wish I had better news

I agree with Mark, I don't think you'll be able to successfully remove it without seriously destroying the rest of the audio. Your bride should be understanding, it's something that occurred during her live event that was completely out of your control. Not knowing what part of the wedding it occurred at, is it a spot you can just cover up with music and not use the ambient audio at all?

Adobe Audition or Soundbooth can easily remove those car alarm sounds, annoying cell phone rings with the Audio Healing Tool. You view the audio in what the call "Spectral View". It shows the audio in a colorful pattern that allows you to visually see where the offensive audio is. You just grab your lasso tool and drag it around the orange/red area where the car alarm noise is and auto heal or hit the delete key. It samples audio from around the noise and replaces it with that. Kind of like the healing brush tool in photoshop.

If only I had those programs. Although, I'm wondering if Adobe has a 30-day trial version that I could try out? Hmmm. I'll check that out. Thanks! Smile

I know the bride will totally understand if it remains, but I'm quite retentive when it comes to details. Sometimes, it's a bad thing, because I'll overwork myself to the point of exhaustion, just to spend hours polishing a little glitch or something. I'm still sorting out the balance in this whole self-employed thing. Crazy Even my poor husband hardly sees me anymore, except for when we're shooting. Sly

I'd just cut it out, but it's during the opening reading of their ceremony. Unsure And, the project is coming along beautifully, with a great build-up, nice and romantic and then WAH-WAH-WAH-WAH-WAH..... ugh!

I was easily able to remove the car alarm sound for Teresa. It took about 1 second. Literally. If you use Adobe Audition or Soundbooth, you can see the car alarm very clearly in the Spectal Frequency View and simply highlight and delete the sound without any effect to the speaker's voice. This is a perfect example of using an audio program like this since the car alarm is at a much higher frequency than the speaker. I was also able to remove the clicking noise from the photographer's flash very easily by using what is equivalent to a healing brush tool. Pretty cool stuff! :)

I like/need to load the software on more than one machine...not real happy with their EULA agreement and one use policy on their products....

I'm impressed that you even read that crap. LOL!! I thought all software was pretty much for use on one computer (sometimes OK for desktop and laptop)...at least that's how I've always done things.

Teressa, from what I saw on the FCP Studio Tour, Soundtrack Pro can do this as well. Allthough I haven't had a chance to play with ti to do as such.
See if you can find out how on the Apple forums or FCP forums on dvinfo.com.

Laura, I have Audition 1.0. I'm guessing I would need to upgrade to get "The Healing Tool"? I can get the spectral view you're talking about but I think there are more steps in my version to remove a noise like that.

Try to use the lasso tool or selection tool to drag around a specific area and hit the delete key. The repair transient feature came in a later build.

Chris, if you had to buy one or the other which is best: Audition or Soundbooth? Audition costs double so it has more features and tools? Thanks.

Soundbooth is great for cleaning up audio and has really simple steps to accomplish the tasks. The only thing lacking in Soundbooth is the ability to rip CDs. I haven't tried the music creation part of it. Most of the filters that you would want to use in Audition are included in soundbooth so there really isn't the need for the extra expense. You can always download a free CD rip utility for grabbing audio.
