Need audio equipment suggestions Can't Post

I need to replace
  • 1 Rode NT4 microphone (used for recording live music such as string quartets and live bands, pianos, etc..)
  • 1 Microtrack field recorder with 2gb memory card
  • 1 iriver with giant squid microphone

The Rode microphone has been great but every expensive to replace. The microtrack has been good but I have had problems with peaking in the past. The iRiver I may replace with some other type of recorder, if not another iRiver from ebay.

Thanks for your help.

Shane,
The Octava MK-012 is a phenomenal all around mike. The only draw back is that it needs 18v phantom. It can be purchased from The Sound Room (mention DVXForum and you'll get a 5% discount).

I wouldn't get the microtrack again, Mark Foley can help with a better recorder.

But man....I would stick with the iRiver and GS mic. They are just workhorses for me.

What kind of budget do you have for these purchases?

Shane,
Since you already have experience with RODE, if you don't require a stereo mic for the replacement, the RODE NT3 has been getting some great feedback...and I believe Ron has one... and I think they come in black now :-)

If you need a stereo mic for somewhat cheaper the the NT4, the Audio Technica AT825 is a good choice....

I still like the microtrack especially with the latest revision of firmware although I don't typically use it when there is an unknown voltage (feed). However, there is a new microtrack II coming out sometime in October that will fix many of the shortcomings of the first version...at the very least, there will be a bunch of the early ones for sale when the new one comes out. If you need balanced inputs, the Zoom H4 would be another choice or if the budget will allow, Fostex FR-2LE ...especially one bought through the Oade Brothers with their kick butt mods.... The one feature I really like about the Fostex is the "Auto File Closing": the recording file automatically closes every one minute to secure the up-to-then recorded data.

edit... http://www.oade.com/...ecorders/FR-2LE.html

And like Jeff recommended, you can't go wrong having a iRiver or two for back up...especially if you have a cantankerous priest who doesn't want anything large to be placed on him.

I can only imagine the dread you felt when you realized you had left your equipment...

Re: [szerangue] Need audio equipment suggestions [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Shane;

Again, I’m sorry about your loss. As Mark mentioned I do have the Rode NT3 and it is a very nice mic. I use it mostly for interviews with family and B&G along with the Zoom H4 recorder and a pop filter. Rode does have a new mic, the M3 which is a very versatile mic with a 3 position Pad switch maximizing headroom up to -10dB and 20dB with a high pass filter. It can be powered by a 9v battery or 24-48 phantom power. And yes, it is black. The foam windscreen that comes with the M3 is better (thicker) than the one that comes with the NT3, and they actually describe it as a pop filter. I have not actually had the chance to use the M3 in the field, but have tested it connected to the Zoom H4 and am very pleased with the results. I ordered a pair of M3s before I purchased the AT825 Stereo mic (at Marks suggestion) with the plan to have a pair of mics that I could use to capture stereo, but I needed a stereo mic before I received my M3’s which took 8 weeks to ship from Australia. However, B&H currently has them in stock for a reduced price than what is listed on their website.

If your budget allows you to purchase the Zoom H4 before your deadline of next weekend, I would recommend it. It would be a good replacement. Just give yourself a couple hours to insure you know how to operate it or you could end up having a problem. Mostly I’m referring to the simple record function. When you first press the record button, the light is flashing, it is in pause mode, you must hit the record button again for it to start recording. I remember it this way. When your driving, a flashing light means caution, so be cautious if your zoom record light is flashing, you’re not recording but in pause.

Another thing you want to keep in mind about the Zoom H4 is that you cannot set the internal mic input levels independently. You can however independently set the levels if you’re using external mics. Here is the reason I caution you about this, don’t make the same mistake I made. The first time I used the H4 at a reception I had an external mic plugged up to the DJ’s sound board for input 1 (left) and I had an external mic connected to the H4’s input 2 (right channel). I was in a hurry trying to get my sound set up before the grand entrance and was trying to independently adjust the input levels without success. I just didn’t have enough time to think about it, so since the levels look okay anyway, I just went with it. Well the next day when I got to listening to the audio, I realized I had not recorded with my external inputs at all, but with the internal mics, which explains why I couldn’t adjust the levels independently. So be careful, make sure you have the external inputs selected instead of the mics if your recording with that configuration.

If however your budget allows, get an Edirol R-4, you’ll never look back I guarantee you. In any case, you will probably still want the Zoom H4 anyway, for backup or portability such as in my case; I use the R4 at the reception to capture the entire night. I connect my AT stereo mic to capture ambient while capturing a pure stereo signal directly from the DJ’s soundboard on the other 2 channels. I then use the Zoom to capture interviews with the parents and B&G (to be used as sound-bites) during the 2nd half of the reception in another room somewhere. I’ll also purchase the H2 somewhere down the road I suppose for backup, I just appreciate the H4 because it has the XLR inputs, and with the money I’ve invested in mics, I want to be able to use them. One final thought here concerning the R4. If your capturing all of your audio independently of your camera’s onboard mics, aren’t pressured to purchase a Z1 for example over an FX simply because the Z1 has XLR inputs, you really don’t need them. But then you already have your HD cams, so that’s probably not as much of an issue for you than it is for me. I’ll probably end up purchasing at least 1 Z1 and probably 2 FX’s or whatever is their replacements by the time I save up that kind of cash.

So, I don’t know if this has helped you or not, but I hope nothing but the best for ya, and maybe you’ll still recover your property, you never know, I hope so.

Ron,
Thanks for all the great advice... That Edirol is sweet but at $1199, I am not sure I could swing it. Not even sure I need it but it would be great to have that 40gb drive and 4 channels.
The Zoom looks like a decent replacement for the Microtrack and using it along with the Rode NT4 ought to give me the same kind of recording quality that I was getting from my microtrack.

What do you think about the H2 as a replacement for the iRiver?

Well, since I don't have an H2, I really can't say much about it, however, for me with as much money that I have spent on XLR mics, I would purchase the H4 over the H2. Are you going to get another NT4?

Unless I can come up with a better microphone for about the same price, I think I am going to stick with the NT4. I like the simple setup of using one stereo microphone... but I would appreciate feedback.

I never rely on the soundboard from the DJ, but when they give me a feed, I usually attach an IRiver to it. I always use the Rode NT4 for recording live bands or DJ speakers... so far it has worked pretty good.

But I would be interested in hearing how you configure audio for live bands.

Well I've never had the NT4 (but I like the looks of it) and when I bought my AT825 stereo mic, I felt pretty good about it since is was about $130 cheaper than the NT4 The AT825 is very sensitive though when handling it. I don't know if that means that it a better mic or not. But I'm pretty happy with the sound.

As far as my configuration for a live band, well I use the R4 for that. I connect channels 1 & 2 to the soudboard stereo out, and I connect the AT825 to the other 2 channels to pick up ambient. If you haven't heard any of my audio/video from my recent live performance, give it a look/listen. Here's the link

Re: [Ron Priest] Need audio equipment suggestions [In reply to] Can't Post

Ron, I don't think I have ever shot a wedding where the live band had a soundboard. So for the most part there is no way to get a feed from a soundboard for a live band. So what I have to do is find a good location where the sound is pretty full and just mic that spot. The NT4 works pretty good for that environment. Plus, there is the hint of ambient sound also.
I think I would like to have the Edirol but not sure I can justify th expense.

I am planning on calling Sweetwater about the equipment anyway but thanks for the heads up on B&H... B&H is great if you know what you want but in my experience they are not very helpful in trying to determine what is best for your needs. In this case, I need a salesmen who can help guide me in my purchase.. I am going to try Sweetwater first, I may call B&H if I can't get satisfaction there. Thanks.

Shane, if you do end up purchaseing a Edirol R-4 you will want to look at this page first and make sure you don't purchase on with the seral numbers listed for this know issue (even though the fix works fine, - it did for me, but there is no sense in purchasing one with a known problem)

http://www.edirol.com/...d=206&Itemid=295

One other thing you'll want to be aware of with the Zoom H-4 it does not stay in sync with your video, but there is an easy fix to that in post. The R4 does stay in sync, all 4 tracks no matter how long the file is.

Re: [Ron Priest] Need audio equipment suggestions [In reply to] Can't Post

Well Ron, I really wanted to go with the Edirol R-4 but just could not bring myself to spend $1200 on the device. I really felt like it was overkill for me, especially since it will be replacing the M-Audio and the M-Audio worked great for me. So I went with the Edirol R-09. It was a toss between that one and the new Korg M3, but it came down to price and the Korg was $700 compared to the $400 R09. I also bought the Zoom H-4 to replace the IRiver. I would have bought the H2 but they did not have any in stock. But like you said, I have some money invested in XLR microphones so the XLR inputs on the H4 are an advantage. I stayed with the NT4 mic. For what I do, I think it was the best choice.
Thanks for your help.
