couldnt you use this as a capture mic to add surrround sound to your offerings. I think it would be pretty simple to do, using the 4 channels, add music to your stereo tracks, voice to the center etc....or am I way off?

Must be my ears or speakers. I can barely tell the difference in these recordings. Laugh They both sounded good.

Good to hear the squid mics are interchangeable.

Thanks for doing this Mark. You guys need to get a cheat sheet in the library like the iRivers once you got 'em figured out.

- RT

Easy to figure out.
The only thing that would take some time to get down are some of the menu items that are buried in the unit.

I'm going to pickup a couple SDHC cards (4GB and 8GB) and give em a try. There are reports that the H4 recognizes 8GB cards, whcih would be over 12 hours at the highest recordability (24/96 WAV). Sweet. Smile

I tried some 2 channel surround last night, and even tested 90 degree ercording in the car this morning while driving into work..
I'll try to post some recordings in a day or so.

This is pure laziness not to figure it out myself, but what is the capture capacity with a 2GB SD card set for lav quality and then also for hi fidelity for a really good soloist, string quartet, harpist, etc?

I ask because I already have a half dozen 2GB SD cards that I don't get much use of in my camera.

Tim, here's the SD Card Recording chart on the Samson website.
This was for the H4.

According to Samson, the H2 can take up to 4GB SDHC cards.
And as I reported earlier, users report, that it also seems to recognize 8GB SDHC cards (just can't format them). (EDIT: That's 12+ hours at the defualt and 4 hours of recording time at the highest 24/96 WAV setting).

Michael,

So over three hours at CD quality per 2GB SD card, that's good enough.

As I mentioned, I would rather sectionalize the ceremony, etc. in case the unit is stolen I don't lose the entire actual gig audio capture.

Thanks.

I tried some 2 channel surround last night,

How does this do surround, Michael? It records more than
two channels simultaneously?

They call both 2 channel and 4 channel surround.

The H2 itself has 4 small mic elements in it. And as such uses all 4 elements to record a stereo track.

The resoning for this is that while in either surround mode the H2 records both from the front and back of the unit.
So in essense it is recording 360 degrees.
So you could place the unit in the center of a band, and capture all of the musicians equally, all at the same time.

EDIT: Correction: Creates two seperate WAV files (labels them SR***L and SR***R)...thus allow you to set the 3D panning of the four mic elements
You can then set your surround mix (panning and lowering volume accordingly) all in the unit itself. Therefore you would never have to use a computer for this purpose.

This has been added to the list.

Latest Update on SDHC cards: Just purchased SanDisk (comes with SDHC reader for your computer) and PNY SDHC 4GB cards from Circuit City. The H2 recognized them and formated them with no problem. They also function perfectly. Still waiting to see what the best deal might be on obtaining 8GB SDHC card.

Michael, there's only 24 hours in a day. How long are your weddings? Laugh

BTW... not sure if anybody covered this but can anybody tell how long the batteries last in this thing? It takes AA's right?

Hey Rick, the reason that I would look into 8Gb cards is the ability to record at 24/96 WAV for about 4 hours. Of course I could record at 16/48 (same as recorded video) and record for almost 12 hours or 24/48 for almost 8 hours, and 16/96 will get me about 5 1/2 hours. I won't record at compressed MP3 quality period, only WAV.

yes it takes AA's (2), either as Akeline or NIMH (setup in menu). Mark is testing this, as results will most likely vary, depending on what setup you chose (2ch/4ch). Latest I have seen, has normal recording running about 4-6 hours with high quality NIMH batteries.

BTW, a bad thing that was just added to the list is...
When you change SD cards, the H2 does not retain your current setings.
It will default back to the original recording settings.
So if you were recording at a higher rate then 16/44 WAV or have AGC/Compressor/Limiter turned on, you would have to go back into the menu and reset your recording settings.

Yeah, this is significant as I cannot see any sense in having one card recording capacity longer than reliable battery running power.

Again, I am a believer in compartmentalizing audio capture into appropriate sections rather than putting all my eggs in one basket.

Chalk one up for the antiquated iRiver I guess.

That doesn't sound right. I wonder if the settings are cached on the SD card instead of an internal EPROM or something (which it apparently doesn't have). Man, if I had to do this every time I fired up an iRiver I'd get no recording half the time.

This is where the large SD card comes into play. Actually I have to check it again, and see if it's when ever you change the SD card, or insert a new card that has to be formatted.

EDIT: Rick you are right, your setting seemed to be cached in the SD card themselves and not the H2 memory.
So if you inserted a brand new SD card you would get the deffault 44/16 WAV settings.

Could this problem be solved by pre-storing the settings on each SD card. Or is the problem such as if you were to take the SD card out and put the same SD card back in and the information is still lost?

Yes, that is correct. All settings are stored on each SD card.
If you have the same settings on each card then when you switch out SD cards, you will have the same settings always.

Re: [MLiebergot] Official NEW Zoom H2 Thread! UPDATED... [In reply to] Can't Post

Ok, just did my first field test with the H2 ata wedding this weekend. It worked alright, except for one major problem with the pre amps.

NEW! Pre Amps are not that great.
Used the H2 at a wedding this weekend in placed in front of Bose speakers the DJ was using.
The H2 pre amp was set on M (Medium). I forgot to turn on the onboard limiters, so it was partially my fault on this as well.
It worked flawlessly, until the DJ cranked the sound waaaaaaaay up.
At that point the, audio turned to squelching mush, until I set Pre amp to L (Low), then all was good. And when I mean squelching mess, I mean loud squelching mess. Totally inaudible and useless

So if If you place H2 in front of PA stack, make sure that you turn Pre amp to L (Low).

I never had an issue with my R09 in front of a PA stack doing this, but just be warry to set your H2 to (L) for the pre amp and all will be good.

BTW, I didn't bring my R4 to this event (as it was a small affair), and ran my R09 into the DJ's RCA tape out on his board.
I was told that the tape out wouldn't be effected by his riding the audio levels during the night. I was warry of this and didn't believe him, and should have listened to my gut feeling.
And at the point where he cranked the audio up to max levels, which greatly effected my H2 audio (as mentioned above), he also blew out the levels completely in my R09. That is until I caught his mistake, and corrected the problem in the R09 and on the H2.

What was lame is that he cranked the audio for the Father Daughter dance, which was a slow country song, and absolutely not necessary. Of course the venue also cranked the lighting down in the middle of the dance, which really pissed of the photographer. I just calmly turned on my camera light and told her to use my lighting if needed.

Luckily, I had my wireless handheld micing a PA stack and being fed into my camera, so my audio will be fine for those portions.
Thank God I normally use tripple redundancy for my audio.

In response to to myself on the preamps and loud venue recording.
This should be the best recorder setup to record loud events, like micing a PA stack.

H2 loud environment recording
Mic Gain low,90° from the front, or if desired 2/4 channel surround to record crowd reaction.
Limiter - concert,
Wave 16bit/48 kHz (at least 16/48 so you can have teh same bitrate as your recorded DV tape)
