Zoom H4 audio samples Can't Post

Let me start by saying I'm usually a generation behind in most of my gear Wink. I realize that the Zoom H2 just came out but I just got my Zoom H4 last week and used it at my first wedding over the weekend. I knew the H2 was coming out but I have uses for the XLR inputs on the H4. (My day job is a music teacher and I will also be using the H4 to record my music ensembles).

There was a post in the Members Only forum today about alternate ways to capture toasts. The audio clip below is a short portion of the best man's speech. I placed my H4 about a foot away from the PA speakers to capture this with the H4's built-in microphones. I think it is pretty clear and also captures some of the room noise.

Audio Clip #1

The second example is a video clip of a violinist playing some prelude music. All of the audio on this clip is captured with the H4's onboard mic. The H4 was placed about five feet away from the violin. This is before the wedding starts so you can hear babies crying, etc...

Violin Clip

The final clip is once again mic'ing the PA speaker using the H4's onboard mics. I did add a tiny amount of reverb to the H4 and mixed in a little room noise from one of the cameras.

Dance Clip

With the size of the H4 it is definitely not an iRiver replacement. It is, however, a great way to capture live instrumental music at the ceremony and also can be utilized at the reception/dance.

I purchased mine for $250 new with free shipping from a highly recommended seller on eBay. It came complete with warranty.

HI Chris, thanks for posting the sound clips. It seems you have a lot of clipping on that last one, was settings did you have the mic on? You do know that you can also manually reduce that mic level, right? You can also try the AGC, and or the Limiting effect.

Ron,

I did have the limiter on on that clip. I may try AGC next time. Do you use your H4 to mic the PA stack?

No, I haven't. Not purposely anyway. The first wedding reception I used it for, I thought I had both channels of the DJ's board connected to the zoom's XLR inputs. I mean, I had the wires pluged up anyway. However, I couldn't figure out for the life of me, why I couldn't control the Left and right input levels independently. Later, after I got home I realized that I didn't have the inputs selected. The whole time I was recroding with the built in mics and not the XLR inputs. Man was I ticked at myself. So, maybe someone can LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE!. Make sure you have the external inputs selected and not the internal mics. Just remember, if you can't adjust the levels independently than somethings not right.

I was actually a few feet from the DJ's speakers in this case. I haven't edited that wedding yet, but I did spot check it and it really didn't sound too bad, but it was not what I was wanting. I've since purchased the Edirol R4 to capture my main audio at both the church and reception. It sure is nice not to have to worry about the audio anymore, and not have to have my camera running all the time just to capture sound. I'm now starting to use the H4 more for recording soundbites from parents, and or the bride and groom. However, since I'm not usually in a quiet area, I'll use an external mic with the H4. I'll probably also use the H4 at weddings for the string quartet or the podium perhaps when it's not possible to run a wired mic from those locations to the R4. But, unless I'm using it for ambient sound, I'll probably most likely use the H4 in conjunction with an external mic in most cases.

Also keep in mind that the H4 will not stay in sync throughout an event. It's no big deal actually as it can be fixed in post. I've found that if I stretch the H4's audio file speed setting to 100.05% then the audio will keep in sync with my video. I do this no matter how short or how long the audio file is.

Chris, not bad audio if you ask me. Especially for a wedding.

I use the H4 and R09 quite often, and prefer using the H4 for recording live musicians over the R09, as I prefer to use my own mics via H4's XLR inputs over the onboard mics (But I have used the onbaord mics with good results as well, but it's not as versitile as using seperate mic elements via XL). I also use recorders to mic PA stacks quite often at receptions, with very good results.

However in reagrd to the violin solo, I would do one of two things for better audio.
Move the H4 down low closer to the violin if this is what you really want to capture audio of.
If you wanted to capture both the violin and piano (and they are next to each other), then I would use 2 mono mics (via XLR ports) and capture audio from each to the H4. you will get much better audio this way.

As for the dance clip, I agree that you are getting some clipping. Where is teh placement of your H4 in accodance to the PA stack. If it's dead center, then move it away from there, and place it off axis to the right of the PA stack, in between the tweeter and woofer. Set the H4's gain to either M or L (depending how loud it is) and check occasionally to see if you are getting clipping (just once or twice when there is extreme change in audio).

Here is my setup (at the bottom of the page) using whcih I use either a R09 or H4 to mic a PA stack, and send a wireless signal to my camera for backup sync audio. Depending on what I choose, I either use an AT822 into my recorder or the onboard mics when time is an essence.

Michael

Cameras: I do use them.
Audio: Yes, it does come with audio if you like.
Software: I am learning...
Support: I need all that i can get.
Computer: MAC BABY!

Re: [MLiebergot] Zoom H4 audio samples [In reply to] Can't Post

Michael,

Thanks for your reply. The violin and the piano were about 12 feet apart. I placed the H4 much closer to the violin than the piano. If I had to do it again, I would move it even closer to the violin.

On the dance clip, the H4 was set about a foot and a half away from the speaker, a little bit to the side. The clipping may be coming from the mix from the onboard camera. I had the H4 set to M at about -12 with the limiter on. The wav file on the timeline doesn't show any clipping at all.

This weekend I may try taking on feed from the board to one channel of the H4 and micing the stack with a e604 on the other channel.

I was pleased with the H4 during the toasts. I actually had a line out from the board fed to my camera wirelessly so didn't end up using it at all but it's good to know I have a back up plan. I've had mixed luck with feeds from the DJ.

I've found this out on the edit I'm doing now as I'm using a lot of the H4 audio for the reception. Not an issue really as it is a simple fix.

Yeah? Is it 100.05% for you too?

Well this is strange. I started a new project tonight and I had to streatch my H4 file to 100.01 % instead of the usual 100.05%. I must of been recording at a different setting for this one.
