What were you using? Regular alkalines?

Speaking generally, not about the R44 in particular ...

Usually the biggest battery drain on a device like that is the
phantom powering. Make sure and have it "off" if you don't need
it. If you don't need headphone monitoring, turn that "off" because
it eats juice. If you don't need the unit's lights on then turning
those off helps to conserve battery power.

I don't believe there is a repair process...however you may want to contact Frank George at Edirol and find out frank@rolandsystemsgroup.com

Unless I'm recording an event of less than 1-1.5 hours, I ALWAYS use a double battery source. In my case, I use a Tekkeon power supply and have fresh alkalines in the R44 as a back-up. Some may say this is an overkill...but would have been a lifesaver in your case. One of the neat features of the R44 (that was only available on the R4 Pro) is its ability to use an external power source than automatically switch over to the internal power source without file interuption/file lost.

The phantom being "ON" may very well be it. Not sure if the R44
has variable phantom levels (such as 48 volts, 12 volts) but if the
mic's you're using need less than 48, by turning down the
phantom output on the R44, that will save juice as well. Check the
spec's from the manufacturer for the particular mic for powering
requirements. Many mic's these days can run okay on 11 volts of
phantom.

VLC will sometimes open audio files that were not properly "closed" by the recorder.

I have used lithium batteries in an Edirol R-09HR. They lasted a long time, but died suddenly, even though the battery level meter on the recorder indicated the a full charge.

You have to reverse the tekkeon plug to power the R44...I usually set mine to 12V

Good info about VLC...as this can/probably will happen with others and knowing you can at least recover what was recorded before the batteries lose voltage.
