Audio "fixes" for GL1 Can't Post

I have read much about the audio shortcomings of the GL1. Unfortunately, I am not in the financial situation to unload on an XL1, so my question is: What can I do to maximize the audio of the GL1? Can I plug a boom or shotgun into the camera? Can I use a mixer to add "control"?
Thanks bunches for your help...
Jeff

: I have read much about the audio shortcomings of the GL1.
The short comings are not serious for most users. They are more in the way of complaints from folks expecting $4000 product features in a $2000 package. The two most common complaints are lack of a manual audio level control and lack of audio meters.
If you are seeking the best possible audio from the GL1, use a quality external mic (this applies to ALL camcorders with built-in mics) close to the talent. Use a XLR adapter such as the Studio One Pro or Beachtek and adjust the average audio level to just below the point where the GL1 starts to limit the signal. If your source audio signal is strong enough, use the MIC ATT position to improve the recorded signal to nosie ratio. In this regard, a quality external mixer or mic preamp might be handy, especailly if it has level meters. Beachtek offers a VUIT and VUITPlus products that provide a level meter that maybe suitable (I've not used them).
