Audio Buzzing w/ xl1s Can't Post

Does anyone else have buzzing in their audio? I can't seem to get rid of it completely ever. I'm using an external shotgun mic (not a terribly expensive one), connected to the camera's main microphone inputs. The buzzing increases if I touch the body of the camera. Sounds like a grounding issue, but I'm running the whole rig on batteries.

I've tested away from lights and different locations, lights on and off. Different cables from mic to camera. It doesn't seem to go away. I've also run it with/without adapters to split the mono signal to stereo.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sounds like you've tried everything except a different mic... Need I say more?

You might try a wireless if you have access to one (if not, look for someone who'll demo a unit) and see what happens. If the buzz is still there, it may be in the cam.

Interestingly, I think it's a grounding problem or something. If I coil up a section of the wire to the mic AND hold the coil in my hand, the buzzing goes away. Everything runs on batteries though, so I'm confused. If I hang the coil off the tripod, the buzzing is there, so it's not a cable length thing. It's perplexing. Mic is an ATR55. I tried better cable too, no effect.

You could be right about the grounding. If you can remedy the problem, no matter how primatively, then it isn't the mic unless the mic is where the ground problem is. Hope for this... it'll be easier to diagnose and fix.

Don't forget that batteries are electrical too. True, AC signals are usually more troublesome, but DC can cause problems too. If you don't think so, get a floating ground in your car's engine control computer.

Try a different mic, if the buzz goes away, disassemble the ATR55 and look for corrosion or a flaky wire. If it doesn't go away, you'll probably need to send the XL in for work.

Good luck!

p.s. My motto when I'm running post for commercial accounts is "It may not be art, but it's pretty damned good video."
