Bad sound XL1 Can't Post

I recently plugged in the microphone socket, a Sennheiser
MKE 300 ,and the resultant recording was quite bad.
Thin, and the sound recorded from the side, the photographer talking to the bridal party, was distorted, almost like coming from a a loudspeaker!
I have used this mike with many cameras and get normally great sound!
I set the switch on the side panel to mike , using 12 bit stereo 1.
Can anyone give me instuctions to follow? as I find the manual instructions not very clearly explained!
Anthony

I've used a MKE300 with the XL1 with no problems.
The MKE300 is mono, your recorded sound will be in the left channel only unless you use a mono-to-stereo adapter.
The MKE300 output level is about 3 to 6 dB higher than the Canon mic. If you were in AGC mode and at the MIC setting and the sound level at the mic was highh, it could have resulted in some unwanted AGC effects. In that case using manual level control, or MIC ATT setting can give better sound.
The MKE300 is quite directonal. Sounds from the side or back of the mic will be thin and kind of ugly. Only sound sources from the front can be expected to have a reasonably natural sound.

Don
Thank you for your response, I had the camera set on agc,
and the plug on the mike is a stereo one, but it was an outdoor wedding with sudden gusts of wind, I had a wind gag on the mike! but between these gusts the level did not lift very much, like on some cameras to lift the audio.
I get superb sound with this mike ony my Paanasonic MS5
and DS11 digital, I will try the switch on att and use manual audio next time!
I think some of the distortion also came from the fact that I boosted the sound with a graphic equaliser, try to get rid of some of the wind noise, and probably transferred to my casablanca at a too high a level.
Regards
Anthony

Try them separately and together. See which combination works best. You might find that mainual control and MIC setting works well too

FWIW: a common fix for wind noise is to roll off the low frequencies starting around 200 Hz.
