Canon XL1s focus question Can't Post

OK, don't "kill" me if this question is stupid...

I rented an XL1s this weekend, and had some focusing issues. I haven't operated a professional or semi-professional camera in years, but when I did you could zoom in tight on an object, set the focus manually, and when you zoom out the focus stays on the object (all in manual mode of course). This weekend I tried to do the same with the XL1, but every time I zoomed out the focus went soft.

My question is, is this normal for this camera or was there something wrong with it? (When I operated a studio camera years and years ago, whenever we ran into this problem there was a way to recalibrate the lens so it wouldn't happen again.)

It will be "interesting" to edit the video of the wedding I shot with all these focus issues. By the way, it was my first wedding. I learned a lot - unfortunately I learned it the hard way. I'm friends with the photographer though, so I'll have access to all of his stills. Hopefully the B&G will think this is a stylistic approach, instead of me editing my way out of a nose dive... Wink

I can't speak for all XL1's as I'm a GL2 user - but - a friend is trying to unload his XL1 due to floating focus issues EXACTLY as you had mentioned. He says CANON returned it without repair because they could not duplicate the problem. The problem still occurs.

The problem you describe is way too common. If you search here I'm sure you'll find tons of info.
Basically ,if you were in full manual, the likely cause is the back focus adjustment
If this is the 16x standard lense ,it should go to Canon for service. It is not user adjustable. You should contact the rental agency and explain this to them.Hopefully they may help you out on a future rental and hopefully they send it in for service specifically for the backfocus issue.Mine was misadjusted ,I explained exactly the backfocus issue and they adjusted it no problem.

I would suggest that your friend double check the issue and if it is backfocus Phone the Canon service center and explain the situation asking to have the backfocus adjusted specifically and ask if they could turn it around quickly(downtime).Failing that I'd be interested in the camera.

Smitty -

Judging from our last conversation he's had it with the XL-1. I'll let him know of your interest when he gets back in town. He's over on the other coast (the right coast) playing tourist. As soon as he gets back to the left coast I'll fill him in on your request. He's going to apply the sales price of the XL1 to a new HD anyway - looking at the SONY model.

In the meantime, contact me at support@secondstreetvideo.com with your request and I'll have your email addy for the record.
