Canon XL2 - Is it for real? Can't Post

I've heard alot of talk about Canon coming out with an XL2 model. Does anybody know anything about it? Is is Hi-def? Is it 24p? Does it have 16:9 aspect mode? Is is even real?

There has been talk for nearly a year now. Canon is usually very tight lipped about new gear until about a month or two before it ships when they do a press release. Until the press release, it is all rumor - with perhaps a lot of wishful thinking. If the rebate window on the XL1s has expired, an announcement is possible, but not assured. Add to this that the XL1s is about 3 years old now, the typical product market life of Canon top camcorder over the past 12 or so years.

The XL1 was announced in late 1997, and became generally available in very late 1997 or very early 1998. I believe that the the XL1s came out in 2001. The XL2 referred to in the 1998 and 1999 posts arrived as the XL1s, which was the successor to the XL1, much as the L2 was the successor to the Canon L1. XL2 has become the wishful thinkers designation for the successor camcorder to the current model in the XL1 family.

As you have no doubt seen, about a week after a new top-of-the-line Canon camcorder ships, folks start speculating about the next model.

Yes, it's (finally) for real. Canon has issued a press release announcing the availability of the XL2 sometime in August. The camera will have a 20X lens (plus the other XL1 lenses) and will offer 24p and 30p modes as well as interlaced video. 16:9 is claimed, but I don't know if that's the CCDs' native aspect ratio. MSRP about $5K.

Stuff I've seen indicates it is native 16:9 chip.

It is native 16:9, which means the chip is at least 962 pixels by 480 pixels in size. Check out the specs at http://consumer.usa.canon.com/...14&modelid=10350

I went and read the specs. It's amazing. I hope they will actually deliver in August!
