Can't Capture footage onto deck - XL1 problem or Sony Tape problem? Can't Post

I have a Canon XL1. No problems in the past. Recently, we have run into a problem capturing footage from mini dv tape. We use Sony DVC Premium 60. Edit on Final Cut Pro. Here is the problem:

Filmed at a school in February. Could capture footage in beginning of tape and end of tape, but in middle, deck would not let us capture do to lost frames. We set the dialog box to continue in Final Cut Pro even if we have dropped frames, but it freezes up immediately.

We had to convert over to DVD and then back again.

We continued filming no problem through the spring and into this summer. Each time there was no problem with capturing off of other tapes.

Yesterday, same problem happened again. Except this time can capture NO footage off of tape. We tried different in points to no avail.

What could be causing us not to be able to capture footage? We have tried other decks and the tape still will not capture. We have tried other tapes, and the other decks do capture. We can run the tape in VHS mode on the XL1 and see the footage. We can even run the AV cord into a VHS and make VHS copies. But we can't get the footage into the computer????

We bought our Sony tapes in bulk when they were on sale 8 months ago. I think all tapes came from one of two five pack boxes and may have come from same box.

Is this an XL1 problem or a tape problem????

Thanks so much,
Giff

Will the XL-1 play the tapes?

Can you capture the tapes using the XL-1 as your deck?

Sounds odd that the beginning and end would be fine but not the middle. I would expect it all to be bad. Whenever I've had a problem reading any XL-1 tapes in my deck I knew it was time to have the XL-1 serviced.

We tried to capture using the XL1 and it wouldn't work. We then tried on another XL1S and it wouldn't work.

On our second tape, it was all bad, that is, nothing would capture. But we can see the video if we hook the XL1 up t a video source. So we know the data is there.

Camera has not been serviced in 1 1/2 years and about 20 hours of filming...

I think I would send it in for servicing and include one of the "bad" tapes enclosing a letter explaining your problem.
