DVD footage Can't Post

Hey does anyone know how I would get footage from a DVD into Adobe Premiere for editing? I tried hooking up my DVD player to my camera through video/audio cables, and then hooking up my camera to my computer through firewire, but nothing.

I'm no Canon expert, but these basic guidelines should help.

Theoretically it should work. Practically, it depends on the type of camcorder you use. First of all, are you able to capture footage directly from your camcorder using a prerecorded tape? Perhaps there is faulty cabling. Some A/V connectors on camcorders are output only. So scratch that idea if it's the case. Some camcorders don't have pass-thru functionality. There are settings in your menus to select the function of the A/V I/Os. Again, that depends on the camcorder. Also, and I assume it was this way, put the camcorder in VTR mode, not Camera.

And there is of course the Macrovision protection. If you are attempting to capture footage from a commercial DVD, it is quite possible that the camcorder itself is fitted with the Macrovision filter.

Anyway, those are starter pointers. Another solution is to google a DVD ripper, and rip the whole disk onto your hard drive.

Whihc camcorder are you using? The XL1 does not support analog video input.

Also, as noted above, many if not most MiniDV camcorders will not record or pass-thru material that has a copy protection isngal in it.

Re: [DonP] DVD footage [In reply to] Can't Post

I have a canon XL1s, and the DVD I am trying to copy to my hard drive to be able to import into Adobe is my own footage of a trailer for a short film I am shooting. What happened is that my friend edit it and then lost the video files. Now I need to edit this myself, but I only have the DVD, no files to work from. I have a DVD burner. Is it maybe as simple as getting a program that will rip the files from the DVD and into my hard drive?

Thanks

Sounds like it isn't providing a pass through. You might try recording onto a tape on your camera and then play the tape into your firewire. Alternately I have a DV converter box that I can use for such purposes from analog to DV conversion. Also depending on the compression used on the DVD you may find some strange video once you import and then re-compress for a DVD as you are re-compressing footage which was already compressed to begin with...

The xl1(s) won't passthru but you could record to dv tape from the analog inputs however better yet use a program like DVD2AVI or something similar to convert the audio/video file on the dvd to an avi file . no need to drop it to tape first , no extra wear on the xl1 heads
