Dual Audio Input Question Can't Post

If I am using the MA-100 XLR Adapter can I input one channel from a sound board and then mix the ambient sound from the onboard mic. This would eliminate having to use an audio mixer. Please describe the details. Thank you for your response. DBarlow

First, it is not practical to split the onbaord stereo mic to use only 1 channel, but it can be done. Riding levels would be a pain if you try feed one channel of the Canon mic and one channel of a sound board in to a 16-bit/48 kHz stereo pair. You could use an external mono mic mounted on the XL1 though if you insist on doing this. The Audio 1 contols are level and balance, not a separate level for each channel. (Audio 2 controls are level.)
Do you want to mix in camera, or during post production. Mixing in post would be better, you will have more control over the mix. The 12-bit sound is quite good (for video) actually.
Set the camcorder for 12-bit/4-channel mode. See pages 36-39 in the XL1 manual for details
Record ambient sound with the onboard mic on the Audio 1 pair.
Connect the MA-100 to the Audio 2 input jacks.
Set or pad the sound board output for, say -30 dB and feed it to the MA-100
Capture all four audio chnnels and mix in post.

Re: Dual Audio Input Question [In reply to] Can't Post

David,
you don't say if your camera is the GL1 or the XL1. If it's the GL1, I don't think you can do what you suggest -- because as soon as one plugs the adapter into the audio mini-plug socket, that disengages the onboard mic. If you're using the XL1 -- then I don't know. cheers, d.i.
