The Canon XL1S has the ability to capture both outboard mic (stock shotgun mic) audio and an auxiliary source by switching the audio mode to the 4x12bit audio channels. The best thing you can do is get a MA-100 or MA-200 XLR adaptor for your XL1.

This will allow you to get a higher end wireless mic attached to your XL1 as well as use the shotgun mic for ambient (officiant) audio.

Generally though, depending on the sensitivity of your lavaliere mic, you might be able to pick up all three of them speaking their vows and stuff with little problem. Maybe a little boost in post but that's it.

I hope this helps.
Cheers!

thnaks for your reply,

final cut express 1 wont take 12bit,
i have the MA200

quote from other:

is this useable...

the other option i used sometimes, which depends on your wireless mic setup, the mic might be mono. in that case, you could record 16bit 2channel with 1-channel being the mono mic, and the 2nd channel from whatever other microphone. then, in vegas/fcp/etc.. seperate the audio channels, duplicate each one (so each mono channel becomes stereo) and voila, you have "4 channel audio" from a 2channel 16bit source."

thanks john

Well... you won't really have 4 channels from 2 channels. You'll have two MONO channels that are played out of both speakers.

I'm not sure of a way to plug in "half" of the onboard mic. The onboard mic is a STEREO mic. I've always left the onboard mic on stereo 1 and put my wireless on stereo 2.

I use Vegas for editing and it also won't capture 4-channel audio. However, a small program called Scenalyzer Live *will* capture 4-channel + video in a single pass of the tape. Is there something like that available for the Mac?

Scenalyzer Live is a standalone capture program. You simply capture in Scenalzyer and then load those clips into your NLE. However, it's only for the PC. I was just wondering if there was something similar for the Mac that would also handle 4-channel audio as Scenalyzer does.

The great thing about Scenalyzer is that it will capture, in a single pass, Video+Stereo1 into an AVI file while simultaneously capturing Stereo2 into a separate WAV file. Makes using 4-channel audio a breeze. Before finding Scenalyzer and Vegas, I edited in EditDV/Cinestream. Cinestream had an option to capture either stereo 1 or stereo 2. To get all 4 channels you had to capture TWICE.

If you are going to use four channel audio with Canon XL1 or XL1s, remember that the capture rate drops from 48k 16 bit to 32k 12 bit. Before you edit, set your NLE to manage 12 bit audio. You will likely have to capture video twice to get all audio channels. It is no fun, but can be done.
Personally, I think it is an inefficient way to do things.

If you want to get good audio, there is only one way to do it, and that is to get the microphone as close to the sound source as possible. So invest in more microphones and stand alone recording devices, like iRivers, or get an audio mixer and blend the separate signals into your camera. Only use your on-camera mic for ambient and crowd sounds. That is all it is good for, period.

I've never heard of this. I guess it depends on what you're using to capture.
The software I use captures all channels simultaneously, allowing you to choose which audio source to be recorded as a separate .wav file.

After capturing, I have two things:
1) video with lav audio synched and
2) a perfectly synchronous .wav file for ambient/cam audio

Cheers!

Re: [AndrewMSV] FCE 1+onboard mic+radio mic/xl1s [In reply to] Can't Post

With the earlier versions of Final Cut and Final Cut Express only two audio channels could captured, even though four could be recorded by The Canon XL camera at 12 bit, 32K. I discovered this by not remembering to set a new video project to recognize 12 bit, 32K audio. I had left the audio setting at 48K. Once I correctly set up a new project I discovered I couldn't get all four channels in one capture. Had to recapture audio a second time. (Sorry, I did reference capturing video in my provious post, which was incorrect.) The whole process was such a disruption I resolved to always record audio at 16bit, 48 K in the future.

Since that event I have moved to Final cut HD, which probably does allow a properly set up project to acquire four channels of audio. Since I have never tried, I don't really know for sure.

I can not comment on PC NLE applications, since I've never used them.
