GL-1 Upgrade from ZR-10 ? Can't Post

I own a ZR-10 and after two months of ownership and four hours of recording time, I am experiencing "hungry camera syndrome" whereby my camera eats every tape that I insert into the camera. I can't even insert the recommended cleaning tape as it gets gobbled as well. I use Panasonic ME 60/90 tapes exclusively. I am considering an upgrade to a GL-1, but I would first like to inquire if any GL-1 owners have experienced any major tape/camera problems such as this before I plunk down more than $2000.00 for a new camera. I have a friend who is also considering an upgrade from a Sony TRV-900 to an XL-1 and is willing to sell me her 900 at a fair price;(probably 1/2 the GL-1 new price) so I don't know which way to go on this decision. With the Canon problems that I have had, I am leaning toward the Sony. Though, I know the ZR-10 is a low end camera as far as DV is concerned and you get what you pay for, I think it should have held up better. Any tips on fixing the "tape hungry beast" so I can sell it? Any recommended Canon DV repair shops in Va. Md. or DC areas? Thanks for any info/help that you send this way. Gary Smith

The camera should still be under warranty if it's only two months old. Why don't you send it to Canon Repair Center and have them fix the problem. It shouldn't cost anything. The repair center is in Irvine, Ca though I believe and from what i hear they usually take about two weeks to fix.

Hi Gary,
The same thing happened to me. I bought a brand new Optura Pi and the "tape-eating" syndrome started to happen 10 days after I've had it -- ate up 3 new tapes. It could have been a defective model, but I've read about similar happenings on various forums. So I decided to return the the Optura Pi and bought a Sony TRV-900 instead. I've been using it for the past 3 months without any problems and am very happy with it! Good luck!

If 2 months old, it should be under the Canon warranty. Send it to Canon, the facility nearest to MD/VA/DC is in New Jersey. Call Canon at (800) 828-4040 and follow the prompts for instruction on how to send it back.
I've read few (if any) gripes about GL1 or XL1 eating tapes. I have read reports that TRV900 did have a tendency to develop an appetite for tape over time (a crinkle problem).
