GL1 or vx2000? Can't Post

I have a very hard to decision to make this week and I need some help. I am purchasing a new camcorder, and my two choices are sonys dcr vx2000 or the canon gl1. I can get either camera brand new for 2000$ cuz one of my friends works at sony and can get a deal on that model. So im trying to decide what works for me and it's a very hard decision due to the fact that the vx2000 has features like the bigger ccd's and memory stick along with the fact that its a sony which I've heard is more compatible with computers. What I like about the GL1 is the fluorite lens, the top recording and zoom controls along with the very good reviews on it. Im frightened that the canon gl1 will have picture problems that i read about on this page from other canon gl1 owners and users. Im gunna be using the camera to make bike/skateboard films and probably bigger things in the future such as weddings or maybe a movie with some of my friends trying to act in it. Gimme some input im confused.

If you can't spend some time with each to try it out, then at least spend some time reding posts to Sony user webboards to read what, if any problems the users are having.
I suspect that if the Canon lens and controls are not over riding factors for you, and the price is the same tehn go with the VX2000.

xl1 270k vs vx2k 410k?? [In reply to] Can't Post

re: vx2000 vs canon xl1 / gl1 -- i keep seeing sony ads for "410k pixels" -- compared to canon 270k pixels. a bit more depth reveals sony's 3x 380k pixels. seems like -- what a shock -- a huge bullsh*t shell game all over again. anyone know the real scoop? WHICH CAMERA (forget controls, lenses, blah blah)...assuming all other things equal, WHICH CAMERA WILL GIVE THE BEST RESULTS (image quality) WHEN TAKEN TO 35MM ?? tia / m

485 lines vs. 530 lines - true or false? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi -- since we're on the topic of comparing the Canon GL1 with the Sony VX2000, here's another question.
On the www.DV.com "Cameras" discussion board (discussion boards are under the "Community" rubric), someone recently asked about comparison between these two cameras, and one respondent wrote this (in part), in reply:
< < The GL1 plays back 485 horizontal lines, whereas the VX2000
plays back 530 horizontal lines. They are both great cams, but I would tilt
towards the VX2000, or PD150A. > >
I've had my GL1 for more than a year, have read a fair bit about it online for even longer than that, and I don't recall ever seeing such a statement? Is it true, or spurious, that the GL1 only gives 485 lines of resolution? I'd always thought it was 500 or 525 or something . . .
Any info / rebuttal / confirmation / or comment?
thanks, d.i.
p.s.: the above-noted discussion thread is, specifically:

: Is it true, or spurious
Not sure about playback since DV is rated for 500 lines. All depends on the eyes doing the looking. In any case, the VX2000 does provide somewhat (perhaps 5-10%) higher horizontal resolution than the GL1. The real question is whether or not this is significant for your purposes. Consider that the broadcast NTSC video is limited to about 330 lines by the broadcast channel bandwidth, and those VHS tapes you rent are limitd by the VHS format to about 240 lines. Thus, you can see that there is a lot more to image quality than some nominal 'lines of resolution' rating.
On pixel count. The VX2000 has about 380k active pixels (the rest are not used to form the image, and the GL1 (and XL1 for that matter) about 250k active pixels. By means of pixels shift Canon gets performance that is equivalent to about 375k active pixels for purposes of horizontal resolution (which by the way is a B&W measurement). FWIW professional cameras use methods similar to pixel shift to get well over 600 lines from 370k pixels.
So as is it true or suurious: the answer probably is yes. If you and your clints are satisfied with the result - that is what really matters.

It is difficult to decide which to get. Sony has the newer technology, but some people still prefer the images produced by the GL-1. That is the best way to tell, shoot with both cams before you decide.
As far as 35mm goes...look at the cost of even taking small project to 35mm. EXPEN$IVE!!!! Lots of arguments around whether to use a VX2000 NTSC to produce film. That's why you see so many questions about getting PAL versions of the VX2000 (since it supports 25 fps progressive scan while the NTSC version only supports 15fps).

most TV's only display 420 lines of resolution anyway... [In reply to] Can't Post

Unless you use a HDTV, which then you can go to 1080 lines progressive scan. I wonder if you could see a resolution difference on a "regular" tv???
