how do I plug in my extra mic. and still keep my onboard mic. pluged in and running?

Simplest apprach is to:
From the menu select 12-bit (St1, 2) Audio Mode.
Set the Audio2 input level appropriately (usually mic or mic att)
Connect the external mic to the Audio2 input.
Using the Audio Monitor button select the input to monitor (headphones)
Set record levels.
You will need a capture system taht can deal with 4-channel sound. (Not all NLEs are so equipped.)
Practice until you can get it right before an important shoot.
