Help! Horizontal bars/playback from XL-1 Can't Post

Help!
I have IMPORTANT video footage on a 1 hour dig. cassette tape from a new Canon XL-1, and it appears to be full of horizontal bars during playback!
The image is there, underneath the bars, very clear. Is this some special effect I pushed by accident?
Is the real image OK somewhere hiding underneath?
whats the fix?
thanks, Paul . Direct emails appreciated, thevanrat@earthlink.net

Sounds like major read errors. Could be a clogged head. Try a pass with a head cleaning tape.

You have a head clog, use a head cleaner. You need to periodically check that your XL1 is recording OK.

Try playing back in slow motion and see if the bars go away.

a. the tape can be damaged, like the transfer with in the tape doesn't go smooth.
b. You used differetn brands of tapes, you only one brand that you like and stick with.
c. Clean your heads with a tapecleaner, insert it and press play but also record a couple of seconds to clean the recording head.
d. if it still happens bring you cam to the dealer and get it revised.
