Important Question. Does this happen with your XL1s Can't Post

Hi All

My XL1s is due to go off to service on Monday to have the back focus adjusted. However I recently discovered that while slowly zooming in or out, the focus ring becomes inactive. While it’s zooming you can turn the ring as much as you like and nothing happens, but as soon as I stop zooming the focus ring works (This is in manual focus mode) has any one else experienced this problem.

Just wondering if this is normal. I figured that other people might not have noticed as their back focus would be correct, while we have to start changing the focus while zooming in anticipation for the shot being our of focus at the other end of the zoom range.

I believe this is normal for the electronic lense.Mine is that way.The only work around I use is when zooming and reframing push and hold the AF button while in manual focus. It will refocus in auto while zooming ,then release once you stop zooming.Other option is manual(read pro)lense.

thanks for that, i thought that might be the case. i guess if our back focus was correct we would rarely have to do it once we pre focus.

Having correct back focus adjustment does make big difference , however forward or follow focus is pretty tough to control

Hi,
Saw your note on the Video Uni, and have just joined .......... what a great forum. I wanted to asked you how you got on with the back focus problem on your XL1s. How much did canon charge to seet it up again. Here's my issue

I have an XL1s, with the 3 lens (16x IIs Auto, Manual 16 x and the 3 x Zoom).

I recently bought just another XL1s body, with the intention of utilising one of the spare lens when they were not in use. i.e. get 2 XL1S's for the price of buying a body. - so I thought!

Apparently they are all set up differently.

I put my Auto 16x lens on the body and the back focus was terrible - the manual lens worked fine as you can adjust it, (NB: I am yet to try the 3x Wide Angle, but I guess this should also be fine).

Anyway there's my dilema. Am I right in saying that the new body can be setup to work with my other lens - this is a real pain for me as I thought the lens were completely interchangable.

Any comments would be of help.

cheers

Noel

I believe the backfocus is done electronically to the camera. You would have to ask Canon to verify that this is possible. That is adjust the back focus of the new body and lense without affecting the backfocus of the first body and lense

Welcome to VU

Yes, they finally fixed it.
It was actually the second time i sent it off. The first time i sent it to my local service center and they thought the focus was fine ....idiots. A took it back and the technician and he didn't look at it and sent it interstate.

But yeah, a few weeks later the technician interstate called me personally as i had written regarding the problems. Basically their is no internal back focus in the normal since. It is actually electronically controlled. I can't remember the units of measurement but mine was out by a factor of 6 and the manufactures specification is within 3. They pretty much reprogrammed the lens.

The back focus is great now. We can prefocus.

I would have thought that your lens would be good on both body's if the back focus is OK on the original. Is it bad on the original body?

As for price. Not sure. we paid $190 and they didn't fix it, jsut replaced some random components.. it was then sent of as a rework.

Hi Folks thanks for the quick response: Now I really confused!

My original camera and lens are fine together:

The new body and the lens form the camera above are not.

Do I need to get the body adjusted or the lens? If they adjust the lens then It probably wont work with the original camera.

Tried my manual lens again yesterday and its cool / really sharp.

Thoughts?

Oh and apologies in advance if the note sounds a little sharp - v tired and ready for some sleep.

speak soon

tks again

Noel

Noel, I agree with you as per my previous post.I believe the tech said the body is calibrated to the lense. However this may not be correct. So contact Canon (they respond within 48 hours on the website)and they should be able to tell you the situation.
