For still shots buy a still camera, but don't even use that as a criteria for buing a camcorder. Shoorting on the XL1 in the frame mode or on the DVX100 in progressive will give frames that are free of interlacing and can easily be pulled out for use as still images. I have posted some stills that are actually frames from a Canon GL1 which has the same frame mode as the XL1: http://bobhudson.com/zoo/ And here's just one of them:
If this was shot in normal mode it would have had interlacing artifacts that I would've had to remove in Photoshop and even then it would not look this good. If you are teaching production I think it would be a good idea to use either the DVX100 or the upcoming XL2 because each of those has a 24fps progressive scan mode and for anyone who wants to do video this is now a "must learn." There's a lot out there on the "how" of 24P, but I plan on writing an article on not only some of the "how's," but also the very important "why?" Some folks think 24P and 16:9 are things you do if you plan to transfer your video to film, but in the era of DVDs it's much more than that.
