New GL-1. Have questions! :) Can't Post

Hey all,
Just got my GL-1 from NICE Electronics (aka MP Superstore) and I am soooo excited to get started! I have charged up both batteries...I have ffwd and rwd a tape, but I have a couple of questions that I hope you all can help with.
1. I remember hearing (reading) that there are some steps to go through before recording. I am already "packing" the tapes, but do I need to record with the cap on for some reason?
2. Where can I get the adapter to use better microphones? What is it called?
3. Speaking of mics...any suggestions for a decent boom or shotgun?
4. Any general help or tips that I can implement. Especially anything I should test out before my 14-day return period is up.
THANKS BUNCHES!

You don't need to black the tapes (record with the cap on or the iris full close). The reason some people do this is to prevent discontinuous timecodes.
The best way to disc. t/cs is to use good recording technique. Always do a pre and post roll. That means let the tape run for a few seconds before and after the action shot. This makes editing easier anyway.
Next back up the tape over the last valid t/c. You do this by using record review. Really, you can usually look at the display and see if the cam is over a valid t/c but a lot of people forget...including me. Most of the time record review is not necessary unless the cam goes into power save, which unloads the heads.

mic [In reply to] Can't Post

I like the short shotgun by Sennheiser. It comes in two parts, one a base unit which uses an AA battery, the K6-C, and the other the mic ME66. This is an xbr type connector. The camera accepts only mini connector. You need an xlr adaptor. Studio One Productions makes a great one with two xlr and two mini inputs each with volume control. Very useful. You'll need a short length of xlr cable m/f. I had one made up by www.markertek.com. I bought lots from these guys. Then check out www.lightwavesystems.com for their mic isolation mount and windscreen for the Sennheiser mic setup. This all runs into a fair piece of change all together, but the sound and control really adds to the camera, and hey it looks very impressive when you slap on all this gear! haha. Enjoy your new camera. Do shoot some very clean black or dark surfaces as well as some very white surfaces and check out if all pixels are okay on playback. Decide on one brand of tape and stay with it. Avoid switching brands.
