No Tape in Tape Can't Post

Hypothetical:

If I strip the tape out of a MiniDV cassette and insert the empty casing into my XL1S and/or GL2 and push "record" will I damage the heads or any other parts?

It seems to me that I shouldn't be causing any harm because there is no friction on the heads.

Do you know the answer to this?
Let me know!

Cheers!

Why would you need to do this? The camera will run indefinitely without a tape in it without needing to resort to something like that.

The reason is that while using DTE hardrives on your camcorder, you need to be able to activate the record button. But if someone wanted to go 100% tapeless, they would still need to have a tape in the camera in order to push record. So I'm wondering if you could insert an empty cassette, push record and tape straight to disc without ever using another tape!

Cheers!

So the "record" signal doesn't get sent over the firewire unless a tape is also in the camera? I haven't used one of those devices. It doesn't work without a tape in the drive?

Hey Andrew...

This isn't true for all DTE devices and all cameras. I've been looking at DTEs for a while and had the same question. I think the trick is in deciphering the marketing-speak...

As I recall, the FS-4 (Focus Enhancements) is pretty clear on this, several others have more cryptic statements.

The answers (such as they are) are usually buried well below the casual observer level of info.
