Opinion Help Needed On Price Son's Birthday This Weekend ! Can't Post

I just purchased a xl1's series for my son with the following things that came with it and wanted to know if I got a fair price or not.

Canon XL1's Body (NTSC Format)
Canon 16X Zoom Lens with built-in Optical image stabilization
Canon Full Color LCD Viewfinder
Canon Directional Stereo Microphone including windshield
Canon CA-910 Battery Charger
Canon DC-900 adaptor - to operate without battery
Canon BP-930 Battery
Canon BP-945 etra long-life Battery
Canon lens hood
Canon XL1's Original Owners Manual
Canon Shoulder strap
Canon SP-100 Shoulder Pad
Canon WL-D2000 Wireless Remote
Firewire cable - connect directly to PC or Mac
S-Video cable for superior monitoring
RCA cables for audio and video in/out
Sony Premium 60 minute mini DV cassette - brand new - never opened
Lithium button battery for time and date
EXTRAS INCLUDED:
Directors Clapboard
3 Piece Merkury Digital Care Lens Kit- New
3 Piece Digital Concepts Filters with case - UV, PL, FDL
ProMaster Hardcase with pull-out handle and wheels
Bogen 3126 fluid head with quick-release with 3211 Tripod Legs
5 inch Color LCD Monitor with power adapter and hot shoe camera mount
Hoodman 600 - great when using the LCD monitor

I paid $2,700 . It's been purchased and no turning back but just wanted to make sure that it was a fair price or over priced.

Now I need to know considering he doesn't have a mac and has a windows operating machine what would be a software program for editing that is priced right . Example can you get it at bestbuy.com. It's his birthday this weekend and he is flying in from Manhatten . He goes to NYU. I just hope I got the right stuff. I almost got the XL1 and not the XL1s but was told on here to go with the XL1's

Thank you,
Dad

Super cool dad, you are!

Yes, you got good mileage out of the $2700 you spent.
It's not so much the camera and related accessories (as the lens, camera hood, remote control, and things like that should come with the camera no matter what.)

It's the hard carrying case with wheels, the fluid head and tripod, LCD monitor that would run almost another $2000 on it's own that makes this a steal of the century!

Well done.

As far as the NLE is concerned, what's right for him will depend on what his main purpose will be and his proficiency in using this kind of software. College kids usually have no problem figuring software out on their own so I suppose it's mostly a matter of budget and purpose.

If he is a film student and seriously considering it as a career path, I say get Avid or Edius. Vegas and Premiere are staples of the event videographer crowd. Premiere, in my opinion is the most user-friendly. It's also probably more likely to be available at Best Buy than the others I listed. But you can order any of the aforementioned from B&H (bhphotovideo.com) and have it overnighted if need be.

Let us know how your son reacts to his awesome present.
Cheers!
