PANASONIC AG-DVC30 or Canon GL2????? Can't Post

What's a better camera? For a simple documentary, interviews, good sound, zoom not too important...

best,
jerry

LOL - you're in a GL2 forum and you expect an impartial answer ?

Seriously though, I love my GL2 as well. Haven't tried the other one, but I'm a loyal customer who believes if it works and works well - stick with it.

this is kinda an old thread but I will throw in my 2 cents.

First off on the surface these two cameras are a lot like in many way. Both will require a XLR adapter for professional sound recording and they both use 1/4 CCDs.

The GL2's claim to fame really is it's L-Series Fluorite lens which offers the best optics in it's class. The GL2 has 3 modes one being frame movie mode which gives a film like appearance.

The DVC30 actually borrows from it's older brother the AG-DGX100A by incorporating some gamma controls to enhance it's frame mode. The DVC30 also has the ability to shoot in complete darkness with built in infrared that can capture low/no light images in black and white at a distance of 16 feet with an optional transmitter than will throw infrared to about 100 feet.

While I love the DVC30 I would go with the GL2 since I have seen many documentaries using it and they all looked great so it's it's field tested and passed with flying colors. Invest in the XLR adapter with a good mic and you are ready to go.

MV

Just a side note, on the B&H site they both have the same customer rating of 4.7.

You can buy the DVC30 with the XLR option which will save you from buying cumbersome 3rd party XLR adaptors for the GL2.

Since I own the 30 I'm a bit biased. However I also own a GL1. I'm sure the GL2 improves on some things but Canon doesn't have the best track record for their camcorders. My GL1 has a hot pixel and I know of others who have had similar issues. I'm also not crazy about Canon's control layout. Panasonic cameras just feel so much more intuitive than any others. The 30 also has the excellent rebate going and is better in low light. Oh yeah 12 bit image processing which renders a more natural image.
